The Conjuring Last Rites has the 2nd biggest opening weekend behind only …..

Regardless of mainly unfavorable critic assessments, the fourth installment of The Conjuring series titled “Last Rites” had an impressive box office debut, generating a whopping $187 million during its opening weekend. This is by far the highest launch for the franchise centered around occult themes. Notably, it ranks second only to the 2017 release of “It”, which garnered a staggering $190 million globally as the biggest horror film debut in history.

The franchise began in 2013, led by James Wan, with its debut movie generating $320 million. Its initial sequel followed in 2016, earning $216 million. A third film was released in 2021, impacted by the global lockdown, but still grossed $206 million. However, the Conjuring universe has expanded with several spin-off films, including three Annabelle installments (totaling $257m, $306m, and $231m) and two Nun movies ($366m & $269m). As a result, these nine films have collectively amassed a staggering $2.3 billion, indicating that we can certainly anticipate more productions in the future.

As a cinephile, I couldn’t help but be blown away by the staggering success of “The Conjuring: The Last Rites”! Initially forecasted to gross around $50 million globally, this chilling horror masterpiece shattered those expectations and raked in an impressive $103 million, surpassing the earnings of the previous top-grosser, ‘It Chapter Two’. On home soil, it truly terrifyingly triumphed, amassing a whopping $84 million within its first run!

The upcoming movie marks the supposed finale of ‘Phase One’, with ‘Phase Two’ starting shortly after. However, the specifics about what this transition entails remain unclear. Notably, this fourth film seems to be wrapping up Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren, as suggested by the end credits.
