Captain America Goes Back in Time in New Jack Kirby Inspired 1776 #1 Cover (Exclusive)

This November, Marvel characters are taking a trip back in time to prevent history from being altered – specifically, the early days of American Revolution. In celebration of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, some famous Marvel heroes will journey to the beginning of the American Revolution to team up with key historical figures like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams in a five-issue series titled “1776,” written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Ron Lim and Sean Damien Hill. Meanwhile, ComicBook has an exclusive sneak peek at the special foil variant cover for issue #1 of “1776” by artist David Nakayama, which showcases Jack Kirby’s interpretation of a Revolutionary-era Captain America from the 1976 comic “Captain America’s Bicentennial Battles.” This cover pays tribute to another iconic piece of American history.

In a tribute to the famous Kirby cover design, Nakayama’s illustration showcases Captain America adorning his classic American Revolution uniform, complete with a chest emblem of stars and striped waist detailing, as well as a tri-corner hat sporting the distinctive “A.” The shield is also reminiscent of Kirby’s original creation. This vibrant revamp beautifully reimagines the iconic look of the Revolutionary era, with Captain America striking a dynamic pose ready to take action. Take a peek at it yourself down below.

What is 1776 About?

As Marvel tells us, Captain America and his team of Marvel superheroes prepare to intervene when a shadowy power attempts to manipulate what’s most fundamental – the very fabric of history itself. Their task is crucial: protecting the birth of the United States of America, with both the nation’s destiny and their own lives on the line. On the brink of the American Revolution, they must sail through historical waters to preserve an unspoiled future.

One aspect I admire about the Marvel Universe is its grounded setting in our world, with cities like New York and Chicago, instead of fantasy realms (Straczynski shared this with Marvel). This real-world context allows for unique perspectives on historical events, such as the American Revolution. By examining these pivotal moments through the lives of Marvel characters, we gain fresh insights into their significance and the sacrifices made. Given the current climate where much discussion in America is exaggerated, it’s insightful to reflect on our origins and enduring values.

Part of a Legacy of Honoring America’s Past

Beyond the fresh variant cover saluting a timeless Kirby work, what makes the comic series 1776 particularly captivating is its connection to Marvel’s ongoing tribute to America’s historical legacy. In 1976, Marvel published Captain America’s Bicentennial Battles, where Captain America embarked on a journey through American history, encountering key moments in the nation’s past and discovering that the essence of America lies within its people. As the United States approaches another significant anniversary, having the heroes revisit their roots for another battle over the destiny of the American experiment provides an engaging new perspective not only for the characters to immerse in history, but also for readers to engage with.

1776 #1 goes on sale November 12th.
