The Best 4K and Blu-ray Releases Coming This Week (September 9th)

As a cinephile, I must admit that the first week of September seemed a tad quiet in terms of new 4K and Blu-ray releases, but boy, things are turning around dramatically! This second week of September is shaping up to be one of the most exciting days for new 4K and Blu-ray debuts in recent memory, particularly for new release films. The upcoming weeks will undoubtedly bring some monumental restorations on 4K, but September 9th promises to be a day remembered for the launch of several blockbuster titles from 2025.

On Tuesday, September 9th, Disney, Universal, and Lionsgate will release their films, but smaller studios such as Criterion and Arrow are also contributing this week. Specifically, Criterion is releasing a much-anticipated 4K version on that day, while Arrow introduces an almost forgotten crime thriller to the U.S. market for the first time.

Let’s run through all of the most prominent 4K and Blu-ray releases arriving this week.

Jurassic World Rebirth (Universal)

Following the successful run of theatrical successes for the longstanding Jurassic series, the movie titled “Jurassic World Rebirth” is now available for home viewing on Tuesday across 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. Moreover, a SteelBook edition of the 4K version comes with an exclusive cover design featuring the iconic rock-climbing poster scene.

In a new development, Universal has repackaged their entire Jurassic series in a seven-movie 4K set for re-release. It appears that this could be the trend for future Jurassic movies, given their continued popularity on physical formats.

Prior to its launch, I managed to have a sneak peek at the Rebirth 4K disc, and the quality aligns perfectly with Universal’s standards for this series. The visuals and audio are remarkable in 4K, with underwater sequences particularly impressive. Furthermore, the bonus features are plentiful, offering an extensive featurette that uncovers the intriguing Easter eggs scattered throughout the film.

The main letdown in this presentation lies in the “Alternate Opening” and the Deleted Scenes. Regrettably, there are only two scenes, and they are essentially elongated versions of those that made it into the final film. One of these does include some extra raptor action, which is a small advantage. However, the Alternate Opening simply adds about 30 seconds to the actual movie’s opening, showing people cutting down trees on the island, a find that was rather disappointing.

Ballerina: From the World of John Wick (Lionsgate)

Just like how Jurassic World: Rebirth (and many big-studio productions) offers various formats along with a restricted edition SteelBook, Ballerina will also be releasing in all primary formats, as well as a limited version of the SteelBook. Interestingly, there are two different versions of the 4K SteelBook being launched – one exclusively available at Walmart, and the other only on Amazon.

In the actual, or physical, version of Ballerina, you’ll find three bonus features and a compilation of cut or extended sequences that didn’t make it to the final edit.

Elio (Disney)

Unfortunately, despite positive critiques from critics and favorable responses from viewers, Pixar Animation Studios’ film featuring Elio didn’t perform well. This underperformance appears to have influenced Disney’s decision to restrict the movie’s 4K distribution.

The movie titled “Elio” will be released in 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. However, the 4K version is exclusively offered as a SteelBook edition, meaning there won’t be a regular, non-SteelBook 4K option available. If you wish to own the highest quality format, be prepared to pay collector’s prices.

Clown in a Cornfield (RLJ Entertainment/Shudder)

On the opposite side of that coin lies “Clown in a Cornfield,” an unexpectedly expansive physical release for this summer’s independent slasher movie, which some may not have anticipated would receive such broad distribution.

For the movie “Clown in a Cornfield“, it’s expected to have a typical Blu-ray version for its home release. However, a special SteelBook edition is also available, which includes both 4K and Blu-ray discs. This suggests that there is high faith in this underrated horror gem gaining traction among horror enthusiasts at home.

Proof of the Man (Arrow Video)

You might not be familiar with this film, but the announcement that Arrow is releasing Proof of the Man is fantastic news! This is one of those undiscovered gems, even though it was filmed in both Japan and America. Unfortunately, until now, there has been no home release for it in the United States. With Arrow’s new Blu-ray release, many fans in the U.S. will finally get the chance to see it.

Paraphrasing helps to convey the same information using different words and sentence structures, making the text more natural and easy to read. In this case, I also tried to make sure that the meaning of the original text remained clear and accurate.

The movie weaves a tale about a crime spanning Japan and the United States, prompting a Tokyo detective to collaborate with his NYC counterpart, portrayed by George Kennedy – a renowned character actor from films like “Charade,” “The Naked Gun,” and “Cool Hand Luke.” In fact, Kennedy is considered one of the greatest character actors in history, making this movie a must-watch for his exceptional performance.

High and Low 4K (Criterion Collection)

Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film “High and Low” is considered one of his most notable works in his esteemed career, and it has been part of the Criterion Collection for quite some time. Recently, Criterion has been enhancing many of its titles to 4K resolution, and now this gripping thriller is among those receiving a restoration update.

The timing for the 4K release of “High and Low” couldn’t be more perfect, given that Spike Lee’s reinterpretation of the story, titled “Highest to Lowest,” has recently become available on Apple TV+ following its complete run in theaters.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (Universal)

If you’ve chatted with me regarding animated films or noticed my writings on DreamWorks, you may have picked up that I hold a high regard for “Kung Fu Panda 2” as one of the best animated sequels ever made. Admittedly, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of “Toy Story 2,” but it’s come as close to any other film in this category so far.

Among DreamWorks’ films, this one stands out as the most visually stunning. If you doubt me, grab a copy of the latest 4K version and witness it for yourself. From the initial recap scenes to the climactic epic battle, this film consistently surpasses what one might expect. Since the first Kung Fu Panda was upgraded to 4K last March, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the same upgrade for the sequel. Now all that remains is Kung Fu Panda 3.
