The hit series Jujutsu Kaisen recently released its thrilling follow-up, titled Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, and fans are absolutely thrilled. Even the initial chapter is packed with intriguing developments like Yuta and Maki’s romantic relationship officially being acknowledged only to be abruptly concluded, as well as introducing the idea of aliens trying to live harmoniously with jujutsu sorcerers. Beyond all the complex mythology, Modulo‘s debut chapter has also brought some delightful hidden references, such as subtle nods not just to Hunter x Hunter but also to One Piece.
In Chapter 1 of the comic book titled “Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo“, readers meet Yuka and Tsurugi, the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki, who are set to be the main characters in the upcoming series. Accompanied by Maru, a character disguised as a simurian, they embark on a mission to solve a string of kidnappings happening in Kyoto. The story then unveils the suspect, depicted enjoying video games with his latest abducted victim. A hint is dropped towards the end of the chapter, where an open manga book in the lower right corner references not only “One Piece” but also “Hunter x Hunter“, two series that the creator of “Jujutsu Kaisen“, Gege Akutami, has a particular fondness for.
Gege Akutami References One Piece and Hunter x Hunter in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo

In simple terms, the mentioned reference is a notable scene from the very first chapter of “One Piece.” This scene is easily identifiable, even for those not familiar with the series. The panels portray a crucial moment when Shanks hands over his straw hat to Luffy after rescuing him. Interestingly, in one panel, Gon takes Luffy’s place.
In most other comic series, it might be possible to suggest that the character in this panel could resemble many others with spiky hair. However, since Gege Akutami is well-known as a longtime fan of “Hunter x Hunter”, and with numerous references to it scattered throughout “Jujutsu Kaisen” and the series itself being heavily influenced by “Hunter x Hunter”, it’s quite plausible that this could be a nod or homage to that particular character from the earlier series.

In addition, the references to “One Piece” continue throughout Chapter 1 of “Modulo”. Fans get a peek into Tsurugi’s intense training routine when Yuka discusses his dedication. Notably, Tsurugi’s training regimen mirrors that of a character from “One Piece”, as he is shown swinging a stack of plates on one end of a barbell with the same comical flair as Zoro. All things considered, “Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo” seems to be off to a strong start, offering an intriguing plot and memorable characters. Therefore, it’s worth checking out as soon as possible.
