Among the numerous exciting fan suggestions for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, one actor stands out distinctly – Alan Ritchson, often praised as an ideal choice for the new DCU’s Batman. However, it appears that this collaboration might not materialize, but there are indications that Ritchson may take on a different character in the future. Recently, Ritchson disclosed which DC character he’s content to let go of.
During a chat with Liamlovesmovies, Ritchson was questioned about the possibility of reprising his role as Aquaman. Ritchson responded by saying, “Absolutely not, I would never deprive Momoa of the role, I have far too much admiration for him. I adore Jason Momoa.

In the discussion that followed, it was mentioned that Momoa has taken on the role of Lobo. Although this is accurate, Ritchson hinted at potential new opportunities within the DC Universe. “No, I believe there, I’d really want to delve into unexplored territories,” said Ritchson. “I have a feeling we might. We’ll see,” he added.
King of the Seas
Ritchson has previously immersed himself in the DC Universe; not only did he portray Hawk in Titans, but earlier he starred as Aquaman in Smallville. In fact, Ritchson made his debut in the fifth season of Smallville when he rescued Lois Lane from near-drowning. This encounter led him into conflict with Clark Kent initially, but eventually they joined forces to confront Lex Luthor and halt his Leviathan scheme.
Throughout the series, Ritchson’s character appeared multiple times, including Season 6 when it was unveiled that he had teamed up with Green Arrow’s squad of superheroes, which included Bart Allen (The Flash) and Victor Stone (Cyborg). Aquaman resurfaced in Season 8, still working alongside Oliver’s group, with Dinah Lance by his side.
In the tenth season, Ritchson’s last appearance occurred, a season marked by significant events for his character. Not only did we learn that he tied the knot with Mera, but an encounter with Slade Wilson was also part of the plotline.
Aquaman’s Status in Gunn’s New DC Universe
At present, details about Aquaman’s role in Gunn’s fresh take on the DC Universe remain scarce, but it’s clear that Jason Momoa will not reprise his Aquaman character. This is due to Momoa taking on the part of Lobo, which he will debut in the forthcoming Supergirl production. With Ritchson hinting at potential other roles, it appears that Aquaman’s position remains open for now.
It might take about a minute until Aquaman reappears on the big screen, as other characters like Clayface, Lanterns, Supergirl, Man of Tomorrow (the latest announcement), Batman, and Wonder Woman seem to have higher priority at the moment. With so many projects in the works, it could be some time before there’s room for Aquaman to return.
