In Episode 6 of Alien: Earth, titled “The Fly”, we were transported back to the present time following the emotional flashback storyline in Episode 5 about the tragic fate of the USCSS Maginot. This episode can be thought of as a strategic setup for the second half of the series, with all key characters finding their places on the board, leading up to an anticipated climax. To demonstrate the escalating tension, some significant character developments occurred in this episode.
WARNING: Alien Earth Episode 6 SPOILERS Follow!
Beware The Fly!
In Episode 6 titled “The Fly,” the fly, the fifth and final monster specimen, makes its entrance, marking a dangerous debut. As Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) accompanies Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin) to a meeting with Yutani (Sandra Yi Sencindiver), he assigns hybrid Smee (Jonathan Ajaji) the responsibility of looking after the specimens. Eager to demonstrate his growing maturity, Smee decides to handle the task alone, but soon realizes that he’s unprepared for the terrifying creatures lurking in the cosmos.
As a cinephile, I couldn’t help but notice an ominous hint of tragedy subtly woven into the scene – a chilling precursor to the looming catastrophe. The food Smee carelessly brings into the prison cell, laden with flies and their nest brimming with metallic debris, is a clear indication of the impending chaos.
Even the Eye-octopus monster seems to pick up on this unusual dietary choice; as Smee leaves the cage door ajar, it cleverly uses the sheep’s body it controls to smash into the cell wall, slamming the door shut and trapping Smee inside. The terror doesn’t end there for our poor Lost Boy – just moments later, one of those monstrous alien bugs lands on his arm and spits a corrosive substance onto his face.
Smee meets a gruesome and agonizing death, as his data core (in essence, his brain) is dissolved along with his flesh, leaving behind only a pool of goo for the flies to feast upon. This haunting tableau serves as a grim reminder of the treacherous world these characters inhabit and the relentless danger that lurks around every corner.
Beware The Lost Boy
In Episode 6, it’s Arthur Sylvia (David Rysdahl) who meets his fate as the second character to perish. He was a key scientist at Prodigy, working on the hybrid project and married to Dame Sylvia (Essie Davis). After objecting to a directive ordering the mind-wipe of Curly as a means to treat her psychosis, Arthur is let go from his position at Prodigy. As he departs, he hands vital codes to Hermit (Alex Lawther) for an escape plan involving Wendy (Sydney Chandler) from the Neverland facility. Simultaneously, he deactivates tracking devices for all the “Lost Boys” hybrids. Upon receiving a tracker alert indicating that Smee is no longer operational, Arthur heads to the quarantine lab to determine Smee’s last known whereabouts.
In a distressing turn of events, one of the Lost Boys named Slightly (Adarsh Gourav) has been forced into becoming a double-agent by Weyland-Yutani’s cyborg officer, Morrow (Babou Ceesay). His assignment is to secretly transport a xenomorph within a host, and when Arthur arrives at the lab, it offers an ideal chance. Overwhelmed by this significant choice, Slightly has come to terms with it as a terrified Arthur pleads with him to unlock the lab door to prevent the facehugger from reaching him. The scene ends with Arthur watching helplessly as the creature ultimately decides the fate of the hybrids’ “father.
Are These Two Characters Really Dead?
It could be a bit anticlimactic if either character appears alive after their apparent deaths. However, there are several storytelling techniques that could lead to an unexpected resurrection for both characters.
- Since Smee is a hybrid, it’s currently unclear whether or not his “consciousness” has backups. We’ve seen Prodigy scientists adjust everything from hybrids’ hearing functions to being able to wipe entire sections of their memories like cleaning a hard drive. While Boy Kavalier may be mad about the cost of replacing the body, Smee’s mind could arguably get re-uploaded to a new one, basically “resurrecting” him.
- Arthur is down and out with a xenomorph embryo in his guts; however, we’ve seen human characters with surgery tech resources escape a xenomorph birth before (Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus). Dame Sylvia and Prodigy could arguably beat the clock and get the embryo out of Arthur – granted that Slightly doesn’t avoid detection for too long. We could also see something as radical as Wendy using her new xenomorph speaking abilities to coach the embryo out of Arthur’s body without killing. That would be absolutely wild to see onscreen. Body-horror to the max.
