Intergalactic Could Get Sequels if Successful, But Naughty Dog Doesn’t “Plan Too Much in the Future”

Upon the unveiling of Intergalactic, Naughty Dog expressed that it was initiating a fresh franchise. Though the release date of the initial game remains uncertain, one cannot help but speculate if the studio intends to develop more titles within this universe. Venturing deeper into this topic, Variety questioned director Neil Druckmann about potential continuations such as The Last of Us Part 3 or another Uncharted installment.

Druckmann stated that we generally don’t lay out extensive future plans as we have discovered, and this is a trait I’ve inherited from Naughty Dog culture, that we excel most when working on projects that truly excite us, ignite our passion.

After the triumph of “The Last of Us Part 2”, he reminisces on the team discussions regarding whether they should immediately proceed to “The Last of Us 3”. For quite some time, they explored potential concepts for this upcoming game. They examined various intellectual properties such as “Uncharted” and “Jak and Daxter”. However, the team was eager to delve into the sci-fi concept they had been discussing for a while, which resonates with their passions. As a result, they are now focusing on this project moving forward.

If the Intergalactic project proves successful, Druckmann hints that there’s a possibility for its return, but it doesn’t necessarily imply that it will be Naughty Dog’s immediate follow-up. He leaves open the option of working on something different next, and he stresses that they will evaluate their feelings once the project is complete before deciding on future plans, as there are other ideas they would like to pursue as well.

Neil Druckmann initially had a concept for The Last of Us Part 3, but not the entire storyline. Earlier, he confessed to Cory Barlog from Santa Monica Studio that he lacked the assurance to devise sequels in advance. During an interview with Variety last March, he hinted that The Last of Us Part 2 might be the final installment in the series, but his recent comments suggest that there’s no certainty about it.

Despite the delay, it’ll take some time before “Intergalactic” releases on PlayStation 5. In the interim, you can find Neil Druckmann’s insights on why this is the studio’s most ambitious and expansive project to date by following this link.
