It’s possible that Nintendo DS games could be available on Nintendo Switch Online in the near future, as suggested by a recent report and a new patent filed by Nintendo. This patent hints at the addition of both Wii and DS games to the library, with it seeming likely that DS games will be introduced first.
According to MikeOdysseyYT’s observation, Nintendo has recently updated a patent that some Nintendo enthusiasts believe could be for an accessory for the Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch, enabling a second flip-up screen for playing DS games. This speculation seems plausible given the images provided.
Typically, Nintendo patents cover a wide range of ideas, but in this case, emulating DS games on the Nintendo Switch or its successor would likely require hardware support. This means that a solution cannot be solely software-based. To achieve this, Nintendo might need to develop a new device for facilitating such emulation. As a company known for patenting numerous inventions, it is not surprising that they would protect any potential solutions with patents. Thus, paying attention to this particular patent is warranted, and it certainly piques interest.
It appears that Nintendo has recently updated once more what I suspect is the second screen accessory for the Switch 2, compatible with NSO DS, 3DS, and potentially Wii U. A patent for this was published on September 4th (amidst all the Silksong excitement). This development is certainly happening, and as a blind creator, I must say that unearthing such updates can sometimes be challenging. A credit to my research skills!

No Timeline
It seems that while Nintendo is developing a method to allow DS emulation through the Nintendo Switch Online service, there’s no set timeline for its release. Given that Nintendo may not have started production on this project prior to patenting, it appears that we won’t see this happen anytime soon. Typically, new platforms are added to the Nintendo Switch Online service with a two-year gap in between, so if DS games are next, they might not be available until around 2027. In the meantime, Nintendo will continue to add more N64 and GameCube games to the service.
Alongside continually enhancing the gaming experience on already integrated platforms, Nintendo is also gearing up for the launch of additional platforms on their Nintendo Switch Online service. Notably, they have recently made significant improvements to Game Boy Advance and SNES games, with these updates being implemented this past summer.
After considering all points, and as usual, we welcome your feedback! Feel free to share your thoughts below, and let’s continue the discussion in the ComicBook Forum. So, what do you think should be the first DS games to be added to Nintendo Switch Online?
