Over seven seasons, the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” provided fans with a long-awaited visual account of the galaxy-wide conflict that unfolded on screen. Bridging the gap between “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”, “The Clone Wars” delved into the struggles of renowned characters like Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they defended the Republic. Viewing characters from the films was thrilling, yet the television show also presented new personalities that swiftly became audience favorites. One of the most notable additions was the charismatic pirate Hondo Ohnaka, who recurred throughout the series and has since featured in numerous other projects. It seems his tale isn’t complete just yet.
In an interview with The Direct magazine, Jim Cummings – the voice behind Hondo in Star Wars – hinted at a potential return to the franchise. He teased, “You’ll need to keep watching because Hondo still has more stories to tell.” He loves Hondo because he’s a charming scoundrel. You might even find him trustworthy… though I wouldn’t suggest playing poker with him! Hondo cares for Ezra and the younglings, and he would never intentionally cause harm, but I wouldn’t want to compete with him in any game of chance.
Could Hondo Return in Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2?
Considering the lineup of forthcoming Star Wars productions, it’s plausible that Hondo might make an appearance in Season 2 of Star Wars: Ahsoka, production for which began earlier this year. Hondo shares a captivating past with numerous characters who have been featured on Ahsoka. Without a doubt, the main character herself is one of them, as she encountered Hondo when she was still a Padawan during the Clone Wars. Initially, Hondo took Ahsoka and a group of younglings captive, but later they joined forces to escape General Grievous. Moreover, Hondo has had repeated encounters with Ezra Bridger, a fact well-known to him, as their interactions occurred frequently on Star Wars Rebels.
It’d be exciting to imagine Hondo transitioning from animation to live-action, crossing paths with Ezra once more at a significant life juncture. In the Star Wars Rebels series, they shared a compelling bond, despite Hondo’s sometimes dubious morals. He viewed Ezra as a friend and assisted him in liberating Lothal from Imperial control. The duo might reunite, with Ezra driven to help rescue Ahsoka and Sabine from Peridea. Depending on the New Republic’s cooperation, Ezra may need the assistance of an old pirate like Hondo, who would seize the chance for intergalactic travel. Given his love for adventure, Hondo might even aim to steal the Eye of Sion as a way to boost his legacy.
If Hondo isn’t included in the show “Ahsoka” (which has a lot to manage), it would seem like a lost chance if his character didn’t feature in “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord”. This upcoming animated series, debuting on Disney+ next year, delves into Maul’s life in the criminal underworld post-Clone Wars, where he establishes his own empire. Given that Maul interacts with a multitude of dubious characters like pirates, it makes sense for “Shadow Lord” to explore Maul’s previous meetings with Hondo and his crew during “The Clone Wars”.
Despite where we may find Hondo appearing next, it’s exciting news that Cummings hints at bringing back this beloved character. Scoundrels play an essential role in Star Wars narratives, adding complexity with their morally ambiguous characters who don’t always align themselves with the good versus evil conflict. Hondo, in particular, is a great embodiment of this archetype, captivating fans with his exuberant demeanor. Whether he makes his long-awaited live-action premiere or reappears in animated form, audiences will undoubtedly be thrilled to see more of him.
