David Jason to reprise iconic BBC comedy role for final time in new TV special – and he’s already filmed last scene

In a special television event, the character of grocer Granville, previously portrayed by Sir David Jason, will make his final appearance. This role is one that David Jason initially took on 50 years ago.

In 2026, a special 90-minute documentary called “Open All Hours: Inside Out” will be broadcasted on U&Gold. This production celebrates the 50th anniversary of the beloved comedy series.

In the upcoming episode, the beloved character Granville is set to reappear at Arkwright’s store, written by the original author Roy Clarke. This brief encounter, previously filmed this year, promises to delight fans.

Additionally, it will include intimate behind-the-scenes glimpses, where Sir David recalls his most cherished experiences during his tenure as Granville.

Sir David, now 85 years old, expressed his delight by saying: “I’m thrilled to return! For more than half my life, I was associated with Granville, which makes this performance hold a deeply cherished spot within my heart.

He went on to say: “This show has a wealth of memories and tales, and I’m excited to be able to pass them all along to everyone.

The quaint sitcom “Open All Hours,” featuring humor centered around a corner shop, made its debut on BBC screens in 1973 with a special episode. Following this successful pilot, the show was picked up for regular broadcast from 1976 until 1985.

As a devoted admirer, I’d say that I was fortunate enough to be part of the ‘Open All Hours’ family, where I stepped into the shoes of Sir David’s character – the clever yet endearing nephew, assisting Ronnie Barker’s Arkwright, a penny-pinching and quirky grocer, in his bustling shop.

After Arkwright’s and Barker’s demise in 2005, Granville assumed ownership of the store, while his son Leroy (James Baxter) joined the team as an assistant.

Sir David is the only actor to have appeared in every episode of the show.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming episodes of U&Gold! Just like Mark Iddon, Senior Commissioning Editor of the series, I eagerly anticipate sharing with you what we have meticulously crafted. Open All Hours, a truly unique gem, continues to resonate and remain as timeless and relevant after 50 years as it was when it first aired.

Gerald Casey, the Head of Programming for U&GOLD, stated: “Open All Hours is a timeless gem that’s deeply ingrained in our culture at U&Gold. We’re delighted to offer fans even more of their favorite content as Sir David Jason shares tales from the set, along with his fellow cast members.

Matt Crook, Head of Studio Crook, expressed his enthusiasm: “It’s great to be collaborating with UKTV again, especially on one of my most cherished sitcoms. The timeless charm of Open All Hours makes it an exceptional series, and we are diligently working alongside the talented Roy Clarke and Sir David Jason to deliver some fresh twists to the story.
