In its latest presentation, Nintendo unveiled that the follow-up to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will be called “Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” This upcoming film, a joint venture between Nintendo and Illumination, has also released a sneak peek trailer. Alongside the title announcement, Nintendo has officially set April 3, 2026 as the release date for this movie in theaters.
Titled “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” this production is expected to draw inspiration from the highly praised Super Mario Galaxy games initially launched on the Wii console. Like the duo of games featuring manipulated gravity, the forthcoming film will similarly feature Mario traversing various celestial bodies.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the same talented folks are coming back to lend their voices to our beloved characters! Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson will reprise their roles as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Toad, and Kamek respectively in the upcoming movie. Since this new adventure is inspired by Super Mario Galaxy, we can anticipate an announcement soon about who will bring Rosalina to life on screen!
Contrary to earlier speculations suggesting the movie would be titled “Super Mario World”, it’s now officially confirmed as “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”. This shift in title derives from a prior event, NBCUniversal’s 2025-2026 Upfront showcase, where “Super Mario World” was mentioned among their upcoming projects.
The NBC Universal site showcases an array of thrilling movies from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, and Illumination. Some of these films include “Megan 2.0,” “Nobody 2,” “Bad Guys 2,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Downton Abbey: The Final Chapter,” “Black Phone 2,” “HIM,” “The Phoenician Plan,” “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Shrek,” and “Minions.”
In October 2024, during an interview, Keanu Reeves (who voices Toad in “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”) hinted at a wider scope for the sequel compared to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” He also mentioned that the movie’s setting would feature captivating backstory elements and include hidden references for dedicated fans.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say that the second movie expands its horizons significantly, delving into areas of the Mario world that are rich with fascinating lore. I can hardly wait to uncover all those hidden gems – some truly incredible Easter eggs! It’s been an absolute thrill so far.
The movie based on Super Mario Galaxy was initially revealed as an untitled sequel back in March 2024. At that time, Nintendo confirmed that Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, would contribute to the film’s production. This announcement was made during MAR10 Day 2024, with Miyamoto working alongside producer Chris Meledandri. For the upcoming sequel, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will once again take on directing duties.
In 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie turned out to be a huge financial success, eventually earning over $900 million while only costing $400 million to produce, making it the highest-grossing film of that year.
