The 2023 film version of The Super Mario Bros., produced by Nintendo, was a massive hit at the box office, earning over $1.36 billion. Ever since, fans have been eagerly anticipating a sequel. Today during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, they finally confirmed it! The sequel is titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and we’re excited about the possibility of seeing a certain game character in Mario’s cinematic universe.
In a novel twist, Super Mario Galaxy innovatively refreshed the classic Super Mario gameplay by incorporating fresh concepts, one of which was the introduction of new characters. Among these newcomers is Rosalina, who nurtures the charming Lumas at the Comet Observatory. Her duties eventually lead her into confrontations with Bowser.
In the movie, Rosalina is expected to play a significant role, and if that’s the case, she might be featured for longer scenes. Throughout the story, Rosalina assists Mario and Luigi in their mission to save Princess Peach. Once enough Power Stars are gathered, Rosalina leads you to the final battle against Bowser, where they aim to reclaim the Grand Stars and Princess Peach. Depending on the stars collected, there could be additional scenes featuring Rosalina.
A New Fan Favorite
In a way that connects deeply with fans, Rosalina’s background story is particularly compelling. This is largely due to her encounter with a young Luma, where she aids them in reassembling their spaceship to be reunited with their mother. Throughout an adventure filled with various incidents, they ultimately construct the Comet Observatory. However, throughout this journey, Rosalina experiences profound longing for her own mother and home.
In the Comet Observatory’s storybook, it is hinted (without explicitly stating) that Rosalina yearns for her mother who walked away while assuring her protection. Her mother promises to watch over her like the sun during the day and the moon at night. When Rosalina inquires about what happens when it rains, her mother replies that she will transform into a star within the clouds, waiting until Rosalina’s tears have subsided.
Upon awakening, the girl finds herself weeping profusely, accepting the harsh reality that she’d no longer have the chance to meet her mother again. With no promising leads emerging from Luma’s investigation, the girl confides in Luma about her mother’s last words and promises to protect and care for Luma moving forward. This moment marks a significant shift, prompting Rosalina to take in more Lumas over time. However, the narrative unveils that this change was also a result of Rosalina accepting a profound truth – her mother wasn’t somewhere in the sky, but lay asleep beneath the tree on the hill. This revelation eventually inspires Rosalina and the Lumas to make regular pilgrimages back home every century, to pay their respects to their lost loved one.
Typically, Rosalina can be seen wearing her distinctive aqua gown and holding her star wand, but she’s also donned a few alternative outfits across different games. In titles like Super Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros., she demonstrates her potent and enigmatic cosmic powers. These abilities include creating protective shields around herself and others, floating and hovering in mid-air, deflecting attacks using her wand, and a spinning maneuver that can eliminate enemies effectively.
Even More Nintendo Gems on the Way
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that not only is the Super Mario Bros. Movie in the works, but Nintendo has also announced plans for a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda! It appears this project is progressing, which means if Zelda manages to capture the same enchantment as Mario did, Nintendo could potentially score three successful movie adaptations within just two years. What an exciting time for us fans!
Nintendo has a wealth of popular franchises, and if games like Mario and Zelda become successful hits, it could open up opportunities for other fan-favorite series to be adapted into films as well. Some examples include Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing, Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby, Fire Emblem, and Splatoon. Moreover, there are already plans for additional Mario and Zelda sequels in the pipeline too.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 2026.
