Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is coming to Xbox — This remade JRPG classic will also include Xbox Play Anywhere support, perfect for on-the-go gamers

During Nintendo Direct September 2025, a surprising and exhilarating announcement was made by Square Enix: the revival of an unexpected title that sparked a wave of excitement among longtime Dragon Quest enthusiasts, harkening back to their cherished past – the remastered version, Dragon Quest VII Redesigned.

The game you’re referring to is actually a second re-creation of Dragon Quest VII: The Lost Age of the Brave, which is the seventh principal chapter in Square Enix’s well-known Dragon Quest series.

The game first came out for PlayStation One back in 2000, and then it got a re-imagined version on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013.

On February 5, 2026, the classic RPG with a nostalgic feel will be revamped once more, available on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch platforms, and personal computers.

For people not acquainted with the initial game, Dragon Quest VII is a role-playing game set in a fantasy world, where the story revolves around a group of adventurers who travel across various lands and unexplored islands close to their home of Estard, unraveling mysteries along the way.

As they journey along, our heroic characters will unearth age-old mysteries, traverse breathtaking landscapes, and engage in combat with colossal beasts and wicked antagonists in a tactical battle sequence.

In the initial edition, the game cleverly combined pixel-style characters with three-dimensional backdrops; on the other hand, the 2013 version for Nintendo 3DS utilized completely three-dimensional graphics.

Based on the trailer, it seems that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is set to adopt the 3D style from the 3DS version, enhancing it with modern, high-definition graphics. The adorable aesthetic from the original game will still be preserved.

In the reimagined version of Dragon Quest VII, dialogues are now fully voice-acted, a first for this game series where dialogues were previously only text-based.

In addition, the revamped version of Dragon Quest VII, titled Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, will boast an upgraded turn-based battle mechanic similar to its original counterpart.

In the initial Dragon Quest VII, you have the ability to outfit your team with professions, serving as the game’s character classes that bestow them with potent skills and access to formidable weapons.

In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, it is now possible for party members to have two jobs simultaneously, as opposed to just one, due to the addition of the ‘Moonlight’ system.

Furthermore, every Vocation receives a unique Vocational Ability, which are exceptional attack and assistance abilities that can be triggered when a character builds up energy during combat.

Additionally, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined offers a Monster Master Profession and enhancements to gameplay such as visible enemies on the map (eradicating random battles), swiftly defeating foes significantly weaker than your level with a single attack, strategic choices for party members, and speed adjustment options in combat.

Time to embark on another Dragon Quest on Xbox

Square Enix is making a significant effort to provide an extensive selection of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) on Xbox during this winter season and beyond.

We now have several exciting games in our collection, including Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, an updated HD-2D version of Dragon Quest I+II, the highly anticipated Xbox release of Final Fantasy VII Remake (with a confirmed launch date), and another remake for Dragon Quest VII on the horizon.

Instead of feeling slightly let down that this new game won’t feature an HD-2D art style similar to Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which I adore for its pixel art, I must admit that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined’s fully 3D graphics are extremely impressive and they beautifully capture the original game’s enchanting aesthetic.

Living in the UK as a gaming enthusiast, I regrettably missed out on playing the initial PlayStation One edition of Dragon Quest VII, since it was exclusively launched in Japan and North America.

In the 2010s, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Nintendo 3DS remake, and I must say, it was quite captivating. What stood out to me was its extensive character customization possibilities through the Vocation system, which allowed for a unique playstyle for each character. Additionally, the game offered some truly memorable boss fights towards the end that kept me on my toes.

I’m really looking forward to experiencing those memories again in high-definition with the release of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined on February 5, 2026. It will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, the new Nintendo Switch, Nintendo’s next console model, and PC through Steam.

The game’s progress can also be synced with Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing you to pick up where you left off on any suitable Xbox console or Windows PC, provided that you own the digital version of the game.

Pre-orders for the refreshed version of Dragon Quest VII, titled “Dragon Quest VII Reimagined,” can be made across multiple internet retailers. They offer different versions including the Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector’s Edition options for this game.
