As a horror fan, I was thrilled to discover that one of the strangest, most talked-about cult horror films of the last few years just popped up on Netflix! It’s got a seriously impressive 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is always a good sign. Netflix already has a great selection of scary movies – I’ve been loving re-watching classics like *Halloween*, *The Conjuring*, *Get Out*, and *28 Weeks Later*. But this new addition arrived super quietly – I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere in the previews for their October releases, which makes it an even cooler find!
As a huge fan of quirky cinema, I was thrilled to see that Alice Lowe’s *Prevenge* is finally on Netflix! This British comedy-slasher, which first came out in 2017 after premiering at Cannes in 2016, is something special. Lowe not only wrote and directed it, but also stars as Ruth, a woman who starts to think her unborn baby is driving her to take revenge after her husband dies. It’s a really bold and unusual film, and honestly, the risks she takes with it completely work. If you’re looking for something a little different, I highly recommend checking it out now that it’s streaming!
Prevenge is One of the Weirdest Horror Movies on Netflix

When Ruth’s husband dies in a rock-climbing accident – abandoned by his climbing partners – she vows revenge while eight months pregnant. In a darkly comedic and unconventional horror story, Ruth enlists her unborn baby in her quest, targeting a pet shop owner, a DJ, a hiring manager, and a yoga instructor. Throughout, she continues her regular check-ups with her midwife (Jo Hartley).
Despite the film’s violent and darkly funny surface, *Prevenge* is deeply moving and explores profound sadness. The main character, Ruth, is devastated by her husband’s death and struggles with intense grief, leading her to act in increasingly extreme ways. She even begins to believe her unborn baby is communicating with her. The film cleverly leaves it unclear whether the baby is actually influencing her actions or if these are simply the result of her overwhelming grief, and that ambiguity is a testament to the writer’s skill.
Alice Lowe first gained recognition as a co-writer of the 2012 dark comedy *Sightseers*. In 2016, she made her directorial debut with *Prevenge*, which led to even bigger opportunities. Most recently, she wrote, directed, and starred in *Timestalker* (2024), a unique romantic-comedy that blends history, science fiction, and a love story told across multiple lifetimes. Lowe is rapidly becoming known as a leading talent in British independent film, and *Prevenge* is an excellent film to discover her early work.
