Boys & Girls Clubs’ CEO Addresses Nate Bargatze’s Emmys Donation

Nate Bargatze’s Emmys bit resulted in a big payout.

The host tried a playful trick to encourage brief acceptance speeches – he pledged $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but said he’d deduct $1,000 for every speech that ran long. Unfortunately, this plan backfired, and the total donation amount ended up in the negative. Luckily, Nate stepped in and announced that CBS would donate $100,000, and he personally contributed $250,000, ensuring a substantial gift to the organization.

Jim Clark, President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, called the $350,000 raised “incredible.”

We’re incredibly grateful to Nate Bargatze, CBS, and the Emmy Awards team for their generous support of Boys & Girls Clubs,” a spokesperson said. “It was a special experience for our club members to be on stage with the night’s winners, and it was particularly meaningful knowing that some of our former members have also won Emmys.

As soon as Nate revealed his plan on stage, the camera focused on JB Smoove, a former member of the Boys & Girls Club, who was sitting in the audience with two current young members.

Jim also expressed gratitude to everyone who kept their remarks brief, honoring the spirit of the event and ensuring more time to focus on the young people involved. He highlighted a very generous $350,000 donation from CBS and Nate, calling it a significant investment in the futures and aspirations of millions of young people across the country.

The segment was a lighthearted moment during the show, and Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder even playfully offered to make a donation to cover any extra time her speech took.

John Oliver, known for his wit, briefly spoke after Nate promised to reimburse speakers who kept their remarks under 45 seconds. Oliver used his limited time to playfully call out the comedian.

During his performance, he jokingly told Nate Bargatze, “That’s a lot of money for you!” and added with a laugh, “Looks like we need to add to the swear jar.”

Despite everyone trying to keep things concise, the event ran out of time, and by the end of the September 14th ceremony, they were $60,000 over budget.

Before announcing how much money had been raised, Nate joked from the stage, “I’m actually feeling like I’ve come out ahead tonight!”
