Ah, the curious case of the supposed Final Fantasy 9 Remake.
Although there was a lot of talk for months before the game’s 25th anniversary on July 7th, the project was never made official.
Even though it’s mid-September, the celebrations for the anniversary are still happening. Square Enix recently shared another collection of fan art for Final Fantasy 9, and they’re continuing to post anniversary updates on social media every few days.
What’s the real story here? Is a remake actually happening, or is Square Enix just capitalizing on the hype a little too much?
There was a lot of talk that the remake would be revealed at the recent Nintendo Direct, but it didn’t happen. Now, fans are hoping to see it at Tokyo Game Show, which starts next week on September 25th.
To be honest, we’re starting to doubt the remake will actually happen. It’s possible the project was real at one point, which explains all the rumors, but it looks like it might have been cancelled now.
It’s hard to ignore the feeling that all this months-long hype has to be building towards something big. Even for Square Enix, who are sometimes unpredictable, constantly talking about Final Fantasy 9 for so long without a clear reason is just strange.
What do you think about the rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake? Is it actually happening, or are people just hoping it is? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
