SEGA’s not messing around with its marketing for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
The new 30-second ad cleverly nods to an old SEGA Genesis commercial. That original ad was famously direct – and even a bit harsh – in comparing the Genesis to its competitor, the Super Nintendo.
This video starts off by giving a compliment to the game Mario Kart World. However, it finishes with a playful jab, jokingly asking, “Imagine if you could travel between dimensions, completely customize your vehicle, and race against others on any platform. Or, just, you know, drive around freely?”
This is a clear reference to the new open-world mode in the Nintendo racing game. While some players are having fun with it, others have found it to be somewhat simple and uninteresting.
The gaming market has changed dramatically since the 16-bit days, and now SEGA views Nintendo as an important ally.
We still enjoy the light ribbing in the commercial, though – it’s all good fun.
