Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty season three.
Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty are getting one more trip to Cousins Beach.
After the season three finale aired and it was confirmed there won’t be another season, Prime Video announced on September 17th that they’re making a movie to conclude the story of Belly, Conrad, and their friends.
Amazon MGM Studios and *The Summer I Turned Pretty* announced that Jenny Han, the author of the book series and a director/executive producer on the show, will also write and direct the upcoming film adaptation.
According to a recent statement from Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, *The Summer I Turned Pretty* has become a worldwide hit, resonating with viewers and creating memorable moments. Courtenay Valenti and Vernon Sanders expressed their pride in the show’s success and announced a new collaboration with Jenny Han to continue the story in a way fans will love.
While the cast hasn’t been officially announced, Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, and Christopher Briney are expected to return to finish their characters’ storylines.
This summer, Jenny expressed a desire for her three books to each be adapted into a separate season of a TV show, though a movie adaptation wasn’t being discussed.
Jenny explained to Entertainment Weekly in May that they expanded the story to 11 episodes to give it more room. She also said that she feels good about adapting three books into three seasons.
Earlier this month, she told the publication that fans will be surprised by how much of Belly’s story in Paris and the series finale will be revealed.
As she put it, “It’s not just an epilogue.”
The season three finale didn’t follow the book’s ending exactly. The book included a scene jumping forward to Belly and Conrad’s wedding, but the show didn’t have that. Instead, the episode ended with Belly telling Conrad she loves him after he found her in Paris-a location that wasn’t part of the original story.
The season ended with Belly back at Cousins Beach with Conrad, leaving many questions unanswered – there was no wedding, no glimpse into the future, and no final wrap-up. Though fans hoping for more were disappointed by the September 17th finale, a new movie has been announced that could potentially resolve those remaining storylines. Details about the movie’s plot are still being kept secret.
Jenny explained in a statement that she felt the conclusion of Belly’s story deserved a movie adaptation. She expressed her gratitude to Prime Video for believing in her vision and allowing her to share this last part of the story with fans.

Although the show *We’ll Always Have Summer* starts with Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) finishing her first year of college, season three of *The Summer I Turned Pretty* is set during the summer after her junior year of high school.
So, when Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) has an affair with Lacie Barone (Lily Donoghue) in the show, they’ve actually been dating for four years, not the previously stated two.
In the opening moments of the new season, we see Belly preparing for her first year of college. Before she even opens her dorm room door, her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman) playfully crosses out her full name, Isabel, and just writes “Belly” instead. Later, her new college friend, Anika (Sofia Bryant), also refers to her as Belly.
However, in the book, Belly didn’t correct anyone who called her by her government name.
She explained in her book that she didn’t intentionally choose the name Isabel; it simply came about naturally. She recalled a specific moment when she noticed the name: ‘I remember struggling with my key, then looking up and seeing ‘Isabel’ spelled out in stick-on rhinestones on the door.’
She told her roommate, Jillian Chapel, that her name was Isabel, and that’s what everyone at Finch College began calling her.
Jenny Han’s *To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before*, the first book in a series that Netflix later turned into a movie, came out three years after *We’ll Always Have Summer*. However, the series included subtle references to the earlier book as a nod to its fans.
Belly showed her love for the *To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before* movies by displaying a photo of herself and Jeremiah dressed as characters from the films in her dorm room. The sequel, *P.S. I Still Love You*, even appeared as an answer in a crossword puzzle Conrad Fisher (Chris Briney) and Belly worked on together during Christmas.
During the first season of the TV series, the show delved into Conrad’s battles with anxiety, particularly as he coped with the return of his mother, Susannah Fisher (played by Rachel Blanchard), and her cancer diagnosis. He tried to stay strong while dealing with these difficult emotions.
By the third week, the Stanford student was meeting with a therapist as he prepared to go back to Cousins Beach for a memorial event honoring Susannah. They talked about his worries about attending, but he didn’t discuss the difficulties with his relationships. Still, the important thing is that he’s going, isn’t it?
Belly found out she’d been accepted into a study abroad program in Paris for the next semester, which unfortunately meant she wouldn’t be able to live with her friend Anika in the fall. This happened before Jeremiah had even asked her to marry him.
But in the book, she alters her plans to move in with Belly because she gets engaged unexpectedly. Anika is understanding, texting Belly, “I’m not upset. It’s just disappointing we won’t be roommates, but I’ll make it work.”
Though Taylor Jewel (played by Rain Spencer) and Steven’s relationship isn’t a major focus in the books, it becomes a significant subplot in the newest season of the show. Both Taylor and Steven are currently in other relationships-Taylor is dating Davis, and Steven is with Mia-but they’ve been secretly involved with each other since reconnecting in Manhattan during spring break, the same week Jeramiah betrayed Belly.
Okay, so we were driving, and Steven just DROPS this bomb – he ended things with Mia! He said it was so *we* could try again! I was completely floored, I practically screamed at him to pull the car over. I needed a minute, you know? I got out, and then… it happened. I turned around and saw another car just SMASH into Steven while he was trying to turn around! It was awful! I was so scared. They had to put him in a coma to help him heal, but thankfully, *thankfully*, he’s going to be okay. He’s going to make a full recovery, and honestly, I just can’t stop replaying it all in my head.
Although the same can’t be said for their relationship—at least at this point in the season.
In the story, Belly said yes to Jeremiah’s proposal, even though he had been unfaithful to her during spring break, and their relationship was clearly unhealthy and overly reliant on each other.
She described his proposal in chapter 10, saying he looked at her with such determination and sincerity. She knew his face intimately, perhaps better than anyone-even better than she knew her own, remembering all the hours she’d spent watching him sleep and gently touching his face.
She explained that she wanted to be present for everything in his life, even the small mishaps. She wanted to know the story behind every detail, especially on his face, because it was the face she cherished.
Throughout the story, it’s revealed her choice is also a means of denying her feelings for Conrad, a parallel that appears in the TV series as well.
As a longtime fan, I was a little frustrated watching the show! It felt like Jeremiah’s deception was the main reason he finally proposed to Belly. She *did* tell Taylor that Steven’s accident made her realize life is precious and fleeting, which was heartbreaking. But honestly, it was so obvious she was still trying to avoid admitting her real feelings for Conrad. It just felt like she was making a choice based on everything *but* what she truly wanted.
Taylor’s mother, Lucinda (played by Kristen Connolly), doesn’t appear much in the original book. But her financial problems are a key part of the complicated relationship between Taylor and Steven in the Amazon TV series. Steven discovers Lucinda’s hair salon is losing money after she tries to get him and Belly’s brother to reconnect with Taylor.
Even though Taylor had ended things with Steven, she didn’t want his help anymore. Instead, she teamed up with Lucinda to reduce expenses and eliminate her debts. This difficult time also explains why Taylor struggled to ask for support from others, including Steven.
When Jeremiah and Belly’s relationship began, Jeremiah was still a junior at Finch and didn’t have the stress of graduating hanging over him. Later, he found out he wouldn’t be graduating on schedule. This new complication was ultimately why Belly first hesitated about studying abroad in Paris.
Now that Lucinda was more involved in the show, she and Laurel’s daughter helped Belly find her wedding dress and organize her bridal shower, as Laurel didn’t support the wedding.
The show introduces Kayleigh as Adam Fisher’s secretary and the woman he has an affair with while his wife, Susannah, is battling cancer, adding a complicated romantic subplot. In the original book, Jeremiah and Conrad’s father also has a secretary, Denise Colletti, who handles wedding planning, but their relationship remains professional.
In the book, Belly’s parents, Laurel and John (played by Colin Ferguson), had a clear and separate coparenting relationship. However, the TV series took a different turn in season three: after a conference and some wine, they unexpectedly ended up having a romantic encounter, complicating things.
After Steven’s car accident in episode two, Laurel and John didn’t notice Belly’s worried calls. This left them feeling very guilty about their impulsive night together.
After some disagreements and a period where John didn’t attend Susannah’s memorial, he and Belly started reconnecting. This became clear when Belly couldn’t make it home for Thanksgiving, but a video call with Laurel revealed she and John were celebrating the holiday together.
Before Belly’s wedding, Taylor revealed that Conrad was the one who persuaded Laurel to attend.
In chapter 44, she shared with her best friend, as they were drifting off to sleep, that Conrad had persuaded her mom to attend the bridal shower. She explained that the news had come through a chain of people: from her mom to her own mother, and finally to her.
During the show, Belly suddenly understands that Conrad secretly helped her, which makes her feel very confused while she’s dancing. She’d recently had an edible at her bachelorette party and found herself remembering and replaying special moments they shared, all while the song “we can’t be friends” played.
Originally, Belly planned to study abroad in Paris but missed the application deadline when she decided to stay with Jeremiah instead. After their wedding fell through, she finally got to spend a year in Paris, taking classes online, meeting new people, and even having a brief romance with someone named Benito.
Although viewers only saw a small part of Belly’s time studying abroad in Spain through a letter from Conrad, the show devoted three full episodes to her experiences in France.
For Jenny, expanding on Belly’s time away from her family was needed for the character arc.
Fans will be surprised by how much of the Paris scenes and the show’s ending we reveal,” Jenny shared with Entertainment Weekly in September. “It’s more than just a quick wrap-up; it’s a significant part of the story.
She explained that she continued to revise her scripts while in Paris, constantly realizing she needed to add more details. She felt it was important to capture the experience of living independently for the first time in a new country, as this was a key part of Belly’s character development.
