The Boys Finally Begins Solving a Big Homelander Mystery That Could Be Key to Defeating Him in Season 5

A year after the end of Season 4 of *The Boys*, a key mystery surrounding Homelander is gaining focus. Now that Homelander effectively controls the United States and is promoting the idea that Supes are better than humans, figuring out how to stop him is becoming crucial for the show’s fifth and final season. A possible answer might be found in his origins. During Season 4, Episode 4, when Antony Starr’s character visited the lab where he was created, a memo mentioning something called “Project Odessa” was discovered, hinting at a potential weakness or backstory.

I have to admit, when I first saw it – just a mysterious item in the lab with a super high security tag – I was instantly intrigued. Now, in Season 2 of *Gen V*, that little detail is becoming a huge plot point! It’s not just connected to Homelander, but also to Godolkin University and Marie Moreau. Even though we’re still learning more, what’s been revealed so far in *Gen V* feels like it could seriously impact what happens in Season 5 of *The Boys*. (Just a heads up: this covers spoilers for the first three episodes of *Gen V* Season 2.)

What Is Project Odessa & How Could It Help Beat Homelander?

The second season of *Gen V* immediately focuses on Project Odessa, revealing its history began in 1967 at a Vought laboratory. We see a fire during early Odessa experiments, with Thomas Godolkin present. In the present day, Starlight rescues Marie and asks for her help. She wants Marie to return to Godolkin University to investigate Odessa, believing it’s a powerful weapon that could be crucial in defeating Homelander.

Later episodes reveal more about Odessa: it was a series of experiments where people died, and it’s linked to Marie’s background. We learn she *is* Odessa, and that her parents worked with Vought to have her. It becomes clear Marie was created through Project Odessa, which involved experiments to grant superpowers in a way that was different – and likely more effective – than using Compound V.

From the very beginning of *Gen V*, the show has hinted that Marie Moreau could be as powerful as Homelander, or even more so. Initially, people believed this was due to her blood-bending powers, which seemed to exceed even those of Victoria Neuman. However, the show now suggests her true power comes from her origins in Odessa. There’s a reference to her being the “Chosen One,” a title she dismisses, but it may be the source of her exceptional abilities. This also implies a connection between Marie and Homelander, as both appear to be survivors of whatever happened in Odessa.

Marie’s ability to withstand Homelander’s laser in the *Gen V* finale likely stems from having a similar power base to him. This has led many fans to believe she’ll confront Homelander in *The Boys* Season 5, a possibility strengthened by Starlight recruiting her and the focus on Odessa. While it’s hard to envision Homelander being defeated easily, even by a powerful character like Marie, she could still play a crucial role. If the team can discover the truth about Homelander’s past, they might finally find a way to defeat him.

Could Project Odessa Be Used To Create More Supes Like Homelander?

Project Odessa isn’t just a potential weapon against Homelander; it could also *empower* him. It seems Thomas Godolkin originally created God U with this in mind, and despite many failed experiments, the project may not have been abandoned. This likely explains Starlight’s worry, and could reveal the role of the enigmatic Dean Cipher in all of this.

We still don’t know much about this character, but he’s unsettling and clearly untrustworthy. Marie’s investigation leads her to discover old photos of herself as a baby, including one of him holding her while disguised as a doctor. If he was connected to the events in Odessa and is now at God U training Supes to become incredibly powerful, it suggests he’s planning to conduct more experiments – potentially to create more individuals like Homelander. This could be part of a larger power grab, setting the stage for a major war in Season 5 of *The Boys*.

The first three episodes of *Gen V* Season 2 are now available to stream on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday. You can also watch all four seasons of *The Boys* on Prime Video, and Season 5 is expected to premiere in 2026.
