Both DC and Marvel feature vast Multiverses filled with endless alternate realities. These Multiverses offer fresh and imaginative takes on classic heroes, sometimes giving them completely new backstories or exploring what would happen if different people became heroes. With so many variations, it’s inevitable that some of these alternate heroes are even more compelling than the originals. Freed from the usual constraints of the main DC and Marvel universes, these characters often have more interesting stories and achieve greater success, making their original counterparts seem less impressive. They’ve become some of the most remarkable heroes across the entire Multiverse.
These alternate versions of popular superheroes from DC and Marvel are often more powerful and have stronger reasons for their actions, ultimately leading them to rescue more people than the original versions we typically see.
1) Civil War Captain America
Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America, is a key figure in American history, having battled the Nazis in World War II. But in an alternate reality, known as Earth-717, Captain America’s impact is even more profound. This version of the story takes place during the American Civil War. Here, Union soldier Stephen Rogers is gravely wounded after speaking out against his commander’s cruel treatment of civilians. On the verge of death, he’s saved by We-pi-ahk, a powerful Native American spirit, which imbues him with extraordinary abilities. As Captain America, Stephen fights for the Union, shortening the Civil War by a year and even saving Abraham Lincoln’s life. He also combats the Ku Klux Klan and prevents the devastating Indian Wars and the genocide of Native Americans. His legacy continues after his death, inspiring generations – including his own grandson – to champion equality and freedom for everyone.
2) Tangent Atom
While the Atom is generally known for shrinking in the main DC universe, a version of the character named Adam Thompson is the top hero on Earth-9. As a third-generation superhero, Adam inherited powers from his grandfather, Arthur Thompson, who gained them through a radiation experiment. Adam’s abilities include super strength, flight, energy blasts, the power to become intangible, and control over molecules. He’s saved the world many times, even exposing secret, harmful plots within the US government. When a version of Superman conquered his world, Adam joined the fight against him and was key to bringing down Superman’s rule.
3) Ultimate Spider-Man
Many fans believe the current version of *Ultimate Spider-Man* (Earth-6160) is a significant improvement over the latest *Amazing Spider-Man* comic. This version presents a different life for Peter Parker: he marries Mary Jane, has two children, and his Uncle Ben survives. Interestingly, Peter doesn’t gain his powers from a spider bite as a teen. Instead, the villain known as the Maker causes a ripple effect, and a time-traveling Tony Stark gives the adult Peter the radioactive spider to help fight him. This means Peter doesn’t *accidentally* become Spider-Man; he actively *chooses* to become one, seeking a more meaningful life. As a result, being Spider-Man isn’t a responsibility he’s forced into, but a fulfilling opportunity to help people in the way he’s always dreamed of.
4) Absolute Wonder Woman
In DC’s Absolute Universe, Wonder Woman, known as Diana, has a strikingly different origin story. Instead of being raised on the idyllic island of Themyscira, she grows up in the depths of Hell. Surprisingly, this harsh upbringing makes her even more compassionate and resilient than the traditional Wonder Woman. This version of Diana sees the good in all creatures, even monstrous ones, and is incredibly selfless – she even sacrifices her own arm to save pilot Steve Trevor from the Underworld. Notably, she’s adopted by the sorceress Circe, which grants her access to powerful magic and expands her abilities. Diana is also the first publicly known superhero in this universe, becoming a beacon of hope in a world filled with corruption. Though new to the hero game, she’s already a strong advocate for those in need and is willing to fight against the corrupt Greek Gods of the Absolute Universe to protect humanity.
5) Age of Apocalypse Blink
Clarice Ferguson, who goes by the name Blink, is a mutant capable of creating portals with energy knives. While she’s mostly a minor character in the main Marvel universe (Earth-616), another version of Blink from Earth-295 is a significant hero with a rich story. In her universe, Professor X died before forming the X-Men, allowing the villain Apocalypse to conquer the world. Blink then joined a resistance movement led by a heroic Magneto to fight against him. After defeating Apocalypse, Blink was transported to a new universe with other X-Men from different realities. They were brought together by a powerful being called the Timebroker, who tasked them with protecting the Multiverse as a team known as the Exiles. As their leader, Blink has helped the Exiles save numerous universes from destruction.
6) Kingdom Come Flash
Wally West, known as the Flash from the *Kingdom Come* storyline, has become incredibly powerful, almost like a god. After Superman lost faith in humanity and stepped down, Wally dedicated himself to protecting Keystone City, pushing his speed and abilities to the limit. He no longer holds back, constantly moving at incredible speeds to stop crimes and prevent disasters. He’s become so fast that he appears to be everywhere at once, like an all-seeing guardian. Because of his tireless efforts, Keystone City has become a peaceful and thriving utopia, and its citizens are grateful for their swift protector. Unlike other heroes who quit or retired, Wally continued running and safeguarding the innocent.
7) Star-Lord T’Challa
In the animated series *What If…?* from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we meet Star-Lord T’Challa, a compelling take on both Star-Lord and Black Panther. This version of T’Challa, from Earth-21818, was taken as a child by Yondu and the Ravagers instead of Peter Quill. Recognizing T’Challa’s adventurous spirit, Yondu raised him and showed him the galaxy. Over time, T’Challa’s compassion and intelligence changed Yondu and the Ravagers, inspiring them to become heroes fighting for freedom instead of pirates. As Star-Lord, T’Challa became famous throughout the galaxy for his bravery, even saving Drax’s family from a Kree invasion and, remarkably, convincing Thanos to abandon his destructive plans, saving trillions of lives. Through his natural leadership and selfless nature, T’Challa improved the lives of countless beings across the cosmos.
8) Batman Beyond
In a near-future version of Gotham City (Earth-12), an older Bruce Wayne has retired, and a high school student named Terry McGinnis has become the new Batman. After discovering the Batcave, Terry took on the role to find justice for his father’s death. His advanced Batsuit gives him incredible strength, speed, and the ability to fly with wings and rocket boots. Trained by Bruce Wayne himself, Terry quickly surpassed his mentor’s skills. Unlike Bruce, who was haunted by personal demons, Terry is emotionally stable, kind, and manages to maintain a life outside of crime-fighting. He’s motivated not by anger, but by a desire to make amends for his troubled youth. By learning from Bruce’s mistakes, Terry is a more balanced hero, offering a brighter outlook for the future of the Batman legacy.
9) King Thor
King Thor, from an alternate universe, is what happens when Thor reaches his full potential. He follows in Odin’s footsteps by sacrificing an eye for wisdom and ultimately becomes King of Asgard, gaining incredible power he renames the Thor-Force. A devastating act of spite by Loki nearly destroys all life on Earth, turning Thor into a hardened ruler like his father. After a brutal battle with Galactus, Thor’s divine blood miraculously restores plant life to the ruined planet. With the aid of his daughters, Frigg, Ellisiv, and Atli, he uses magic to bring animals and people back to the newly revitalized Earth. Many consider King Thor to be the wisest and most powerful version of Thor across the entire Multiverse, and he’s rightfully earned his titles as King and protector of all the Nine Realms.
10) All-Star Superman
Few Superman stories are as impactful as *All-Star Superman*. The story begins with Superman absorbing a dangerous amount of solar radiation, which dramatically increases his powers but also gives him a limited lifespan – he’ll soon die and become pure energy. Knowing his time is short, he focuses on helping others and getting his life in order. A particularly memorable moment involves him talking a suicidal woman out of ending her life. When a villain threatens the Sun, Superman makes a final, selfless act: he flies into the dying star to reignite it, releasing all his energy. Unsurprisingly, Superman doesn’t actually die, but transforms into a being of pure energy dedicated to maintaining the Sun and ensuring a brighter future for humanity. *All-Star Superman* offers a unique take on the character, masterfully balancing his incredible power with his human side in a way that few other stories have achieved.
