We’re fascinated by magic – spells for battles, and spells for everyday life, from creating chaos to nurturing growth. The idea of a magical system isn’t just for anime lovers; many of us secretly wish magic were real and could simplify our lives, adding a touch of wonder. Whether you’re still hoping for your Hogwarts acceptance letter or enjoy experiencing magical adventures through animation, mages possess a unique ability to spark our imaginations like nothing else.
Anime often makes magic feel incredibly strong – you can almost feel the magical energy radiating from the screen as characters work hard to master spells and become more powerful, overcoming any challenge. But who are the *best* mages in all of anime? It’s a tough question, and it’s about more than just how powerful their spells are. A truly great mage needs more than just raw power.
5) Megumin from KonoSuba

I’ve noticed Megumin is a bit of a specialist – she only casts one spell, Explosion. But wow, it’s a truly impressive one! It’s actually the most powerful spell out there, usually reserved for immortals like gods and the undead, and it’s effective against all sorts of powerful creatures like spirits and demons. She’s spent all her time perfecting it, and it’s become incredibly concentrated. The downside? It completely drains her, so she can only cast it once before collapsing from exhaustion.
KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
4) Madoka Kaname from Puella Magi Madoka Magica

I’m a huge fan of *Puella Magi Madoka Magica*, and while it *looks* like a typical magical girl show, it’s anything but! It quickly dives into some really dark and complex themes that totally flip the genre on its head. You’re thrown right into intense battles with these terrifying creatures, and you quickly realize Kyuubey isn’t what he seems. Madoka’s journey is heartbreaking as she discovers just how much power a single wish *really* holds, and it’s a power that comes with a truly devastating price. It’s not always an easy watch, but it’s incredibly rewarding!
Puella Magi Madoka Magica can be streamed on Crunchyroll or Hulu where available.
3) Howl Jenkins Pendragon from Howl’s Moving Castle

I’m completely fascinated by Howl! Okay, he’s a bit of a flamboyant character, but seriously, the man is *powerful*. I think he deliberately downplays just how strong he is. The story says he literally gave Calcifer his heart – that’s dedication! – and Calcifer helps him do incredible things, like move his ridiculously awesome, rambling castle. But Howl’s magic *itself* is breathtaking. He can just *step* into different places using portals, and he created an entire field of flowers for Sophie with what he called a tiny bit of effort! He even took down a whole airship with a wave of his hand from miles away, and he’s a master of disguise through shapeshifting. It’s no wonder the King’s sorceress, Madame Suliman, was so desperate to control him and force him into military service – he’s a magical force to be reckoned with!
Howl’s Moving Castle can be streamed on Netflix or Max where available.
2) Elias Ainsworth from The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Elias Ainsworth is a powerful and somewhat frightening mage who lives in a charming cottage in the English countryside. His past is a mystery – some suspect he’s an ancient fae creature, while others believe he might be a dangerous Wendigo. Whatever his origins, his unknown history only adds to the enigma of his incredible magical abilities. He can shapeshift, divide himself into multiple forms, and appears to be immortal, suggesting his full potential hasn’t been revealed. One thing is certain, though: very little seems to bother him.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
1) Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Frieren appears to be a charming and innocent elf, but she’s actually a remarkably powerful and famous mage. Known as “Frieren the Slayer” for defeating more demons than anyone else, she’s lived a very long life and filled it with collecting all sorts of spells. These range from practical everyday uses – like making grapes sour or helping with annoying itches – to more powerful, battle-ready magic. While she enjoys these seemingly simple spells, it’s clear she’s also a skilled and strategic fighter, carefully concealing the full extent of her abilities and magical power.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End can be streamed on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.
