James Gunn, the creative leader of the new DC Universe, has a clear plan for the franchise. He wants each movie and TV show to be enjoyable even if you haven’t seen everything that came before. However, it’s also a connected universe where characters and events from different projects will influence each other. This means long-time fans will get a richer experience, while newcomers can still jump in easily. The second season of *Peacemaker* is a perfect example: it continues the story from season one, but also connects closely to the world introduced in the upcoming *Superman* movie.
From the beginning of the season, it’s been obvious how the two storylines are linked. The main reason ARGUS director Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) is watching Peacemaker (John Cena) is because of a dangerous event involving Lex Luthor in the *Superman* movie. In that film, Luthor almost destroyed reality with his experimental technology, which scared the U.S. government. This makes Peacemaker’s invention – the Quantum Unfolding Chamber – a major concern for them. Be warned: The following contains spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 5
Season 2 of *Peacemaker* reveals Chris’s unsuccessful attempt to join the Justice Gang – the superhero team from *Superman* that includes characters like Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). These story elements connect *Peacemaker* to the broader DC Universe, and the latest episode brings another important piece from *Superman* into his world.
Peacemaker Season 2 Adds Superman‘s Kaiju
The fifth episode ends with a major change for Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker. Believing Emilia Harcourt has turned against him, he decides he’s had enough and chooses to switch places with his alternate self – the one he killed earlier in the season. This new reality gives him everything he’s ever desired: a relationship with Emilia, a good relationship with his father, and a chance to be a hero with his brother. The episode closes with his brother, Keith, calling on him to help fight a massive new threat. Peacemaker joins his father and brother, forming the famous “Top Trio,” and they fly off to battle the monster – which turns out to be the same giant creature Superman and the Justice League previously fought in Metropolis.
Although the episode doesn’t reveal where the creature came from, its arrival is a big deal for the story. It proves the main characters are the world’s top heroes – people in this reality depend on them, not Superman or the Justice League, when everything is at risk. This clearly shows how powerful and important the Smith family is in their world. The creature isn’t just for the plot, either. For fans following the DC Universe, seeing a key element from the recent movie appear in this show proves the creators are building a connected universe, and hints at exciting team-ups to come.
Peacemaker’s Kaiju Shows DC Studios Knows How to Cut Costs
DC Studios is showing smart and efficient filmmaking by bringing back the monster from *Superman*. Building a huge, detailed 3D creature for a movie is incredibly expensive. Instead of creating a brand new one, reusing the existing digital model for *Peacemaker* lets them have an epic finale without spending a fortune. It’s a great way to prioritize both storytelling and budget responsibility.
This isn’t the first time the studio has found creative ways to save money. For example, the costume for Captain Triumph was made by reworking and repainting armor originally used for villains in the *Superman* movie. These choices show the studio is focused on making good stories and high-quality productions, but also careful about staying within budget. This helps keep costs down on each project and avoids disagreements with its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
