A tense moment in Kanye “Ye” West’s family life has come to light.
The new documentary, In Whose Name?, which debuted in theaters on September 19th, features a difficult conversation between rapper Kanye West and his then-mother-in-law, Kris Jenner, about his mental health and the care he was receiving.
In a video from a film directed by Nico Ballesteros and posted online, Kanye West, who has bipolar disorder, told Kris Jenner he’d “rather be dead than take medication.”
He told Kris Jenner, whose daughter Kim Kardashian was his then-wife, that no one in his family had acknowledged or taken responsibility for his hospitalization. This comment, reported by *People*, was made while he was wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat shortly after visiting Donald Trump at the White House in 2018. He then questioned if he was being dishonest, stating that at least half of people would feel the same way.
When Kris says it’s okay what people are saying, Kanye repeatedly yells, “It *does* matter!” at her. Her boyfriend, Corey Gamble, attempts to speak up from just out of view during the argument.
“I’m still thinking about what to say,” the Kardashian star explained. “What we and you think is what’s important, not what people on the internet are saying,” she added, addressing Kanye West directly.
After abruptly leaving the kitchen, the Yeezy founder returned and asked Kris to explain what happened.
“So, what do you think?” he asks. “Did you have an effect on my mental health?”
Oh my god, he *said* it! He actually said ‘yes’! And then… and then he just poured his heart out. It was everything. He told me he loves me, and it wasn’t just *any* ‘I love you’ – it was like he needed me to be happy, to be… perfect for him. And then he said he wants our daughter to feel for me what I feel for him! It’s… it’s just everything I’ve ever dreamed of. I can’t even breathe right now.
TopMob News has reached out to Kris’ reps for comment and have not heard back.
The documentary also shows other difficult times for Kanye, including previews of arguments with his ex-wife, Kim, who he divorced in 2021.
As someone who’s followed Kim Kardashian’s journey, I was really struck by a recent moment shared publicly. She was talking to Kanye, and it was incredibly emotional – she actually started to cry while telling him that he’s changed a lot over the past few years. It’s heartbreaking to witness, especially knowing they share four amazing kids – North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm – and the impact these changes have on their family life.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of relationship dynamics play out, and this clip really struck a chord with me. Kanye is expressing a deep fear to Kim – a fear of losing everything he’s worked for. He’s essentially saying, ‘Don’t ever let me get to a point where I feel like I’ve lost it all,’ and it’s delivered with a real sense of vulnerability, even if it comes across strongly.
After she tells him, “We can talk about that later, but…” Kanye snaps back, “It ain’t no ‘but.’”
