It’s been 12 years since Henry Cavill first played Superman in *Man of Steel*, and now a new actor is taking on the role, marking a significant change for the DC superhero and hopefully leading to a more positive future. Cavill’s version of Superman was somewhat controversial; he and director Zack Snyder presented a darker take on the character compared to the traditionally hopeful portrayal seen in the Christopher Reeve films. Cavill later played Superman again in *Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice*, *Justice League* (including Zack Snyder’s cut), and had a brief cameo after the credits of *Black Adam*.
It hasn’t been long since the previous DC movie universe ended, and now James Gunn is starting a completely new one. This has led to some confusion, as some actors are reprising their roles, but Henry Cavill is no longer playing Superman. David Corenswet is taking over the iconic role. If you’re a DC fan who’s been out of the loop and are planning to watch the 2025 *Superman* movie, you might be wondering what happened – and that’s understandable, because the whole situation is a bit complicated.
The Timeline Of Henry Cavill’s Superman Return & Exit

Henry Cavill’s time as Superman was marked by challenges. While *Man of Steel* wasn’t a complete failure, it didn’t meet box office expectations and its ending – where Superman kills General Zod – sparked a lot of debate. This, combined with Warner Bros.’ wish to emulate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, led them to prioritize *Batman v Superman* over a direct *Man of Steel* sequel. Unfortunately, that film also received mixed reviews, and *Justice League* fared even worse. The production was troubled by studio meddling and a clash of creative visions, ultimately leading to director Zack Snyder being replaced by Joss Whedon, who significantly altered the original plan.
Following the underwhelming reception of the *Justice League* movie, Henry Cavill’s role in the DC Universe became uncertain. There were conflicting reports about his involvement, and the future of the DC films themselves was in flux. Here’s a look at what happened over the years:
- 2017: There are reports of DC being in talks with Matthew Vaughn over directing Man of Steel 2, but these ultimately don’t lead anywhere.
- 2018: It’s reported by THR that Cavill and DC are parting ways, though this remains unconfirmed by either side.
- 2019: Superman cameos at the end of Shazam, but without his face being shown. Cavill was not the actor in the role, as contract negotiations regarding the cameo broke down.
- Later in 2019: Cavill tells Men’s Health that “The cape is in the closet,” and that he hadn’t given up on the role, believing there was still a lot more to do with the character.
- 2020: Deadline reports there are talks for Cavill to play Superman again, but not in a sequel. A different solo movie, this time produced by J.J. Abrams and focusing on a Black Superman, was in the works at this point as well.
- 2021: Zack Snyder’s Justice League releases after years of fans campaigning, restoring his original vision and the full arc of Cavill’s Man of Steel.
- July 2022: Rumors about Cavill returning in Black Adam reach such a fever pitch that, when it wasn’t announced at San Diego Comic-Con and Dwayne Johnson hinted the actor might not be back, the crowd actually booed him.
- October 2022: Johnson and his team strike a deal with Cavill, which leads to him reprising his role as Superman in a post-credits scene, setting up a bigger return. Cavill posts a statement on Instagram that he is back.
- October-December 2022: Shortly after Black Adam‘s release, there’s a shakeup at DC, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over and beginning to plan a new future for the DCU. It’s confirmed, just a couple of months after his return, that Cavill is not part of their plans.
- 2023: Cavill makes his final appearance as Superman with an uncredited cameo in The Flash, which was done via CGI.
James Gunn’s DC Universe Wanted A Fresh Start

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge at DC, making a new Superman movie and nailing the character’s portrayal was a top priority. This ultimately led to replacing Henry Cavill, as they envisioned a younger Superman and wanted to revitalize the franchise. The previous DC Universe (DCEU) had been inconsistent, losing audience interest with a series of disappointing movies and negative reviews throughout the 2020s.
James Gunn kept a few things from the previous DC Universe, like the Peacemaker character, but he understandably wanted a fresh start for the new Superman movie and the entire DC brand. While Henry Cavill wasn’t to blame for the previous DC Universe’s struggles, he had become too closely associated with it. To make Superman appealing to audiences again, it was important to signal a clear change, which led to David Corenswet taking over the role.
It turns out that decision was spot-on. Corenswet is fantastic as Superman, and he’s able to play the optimistic, classic hero that fans didn’t get to see with the previous actor. The movie itself was also a hit, earning over $600 million globally and receiving a strong 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which guaranteed a successful new beginning for DC.
Could Henry Cavill Ever Return To DC?

Although Henry Cavill is stepping away from the role of Superman, a future with DC isn’t entirely off the table. James Gunn discussed Cavill’s departure and the possibility of him returning, noting the unfortunate timing – it happened right as Gunn and Safran were taking over DC Studios and Cavill was starting to reprise the role. Gunn described the situation as unfair to Cavill and a disappointment, explaining that he and Safran made a point of speaking with Cavill directly. He praised Cavill’s professionalism and good nature throughout the conversation.
The director of the upcoming *Superman* movie has said he’s talked to Henry Cavill about finding him another role in a future project, stating he’d “love to put Henry in something.” While it might seem unlikely, this isn’t unprecedented. Jason Momoa, who previously played Aquaman, will return in a different role – Lobo – starting with the *Supergirl* movie in 2026. If Momoa can successfully transition to a new character, there’s hope that Cavill could get another opportunity to shine, even if it’s not as Superman.
Superman is now streaming on HBO Max, which is where you can also find Man of Steel.
