The Boys’ Version of X-Men’s Beast Is Completely Different in Live-Action (& Better For It)

The *X-Men* films often feel restrained. From the very beginning, they’ve toned down the comic book source material, most notably with the team’s all-black leather costumes instead of their colorful originals – even Cyclops makes a self-deprecating comment about ‘yellow spandex’ in the first movie. This reluctance extends beyond just the look of the characters, as the films have generally avoided embracing the more outlandish aspects of the comics in favor of a more realistic tone. However, with mutants now joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these limitations are starting to disappear, and one character in particular seems poised to really shine.

In the post-credits scene of *The Marvels*, Beast looks more like the character from the comics – significantly larger and using his intelligence for heroic purposes. While one key part of Hank McCoy hasn’t appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, the series *Gen V*, a spin-off of *The Boys*, is exploring that side of the character, giving its version of Beast plenty of chances to showcase his abilities.

Dogknott Uses His Heightened Senses to Hunt Down Marie Moreau

The season two premiere of *Gen V* focuses on the hunt for Marie Moreau. The new dean of Godolkin University, Cipher, wants her found, and sends Vought’s best tracker, Dognott, after her. Dognott can track people by their scent, and he quickly picks up Marie’s trail. He locates her at a motel after visiting a convenience store where she made a purchase the previous day, unnerving the store clerk. Though he doesn’t have the same appearance as Beast, Dognott is just as physically powerful, easily overpowering Marie.

Dogknott fails to finish his task simply because Starlight intervenes and easily defeats the Vought employee he was dealing with. This highlights a clear difference between Dogknott and Beast – Dogknott acts impulsively, preferring action over careful planning, unlike the more thoughtful X-Man. Despite this, Dogknott ultimately performs well, demonstrating that even unusual abilities can work in a live-action setting.

The MCU Can Take Cues From Gen V‘s Dogknott

A particularly memorable scene in Dogknott’s motel room fight is when he drops to all fours and attacks, letting his primal instincts take over and demonstrating his determination to win at any cost. While he ultimately fails and is forced to make amends through terrible actions, this sets the stage for a powerful portrayal of Beast in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films. This begins with *Avengers: Doomsday*, where Kelsey Grammer will return to the role and fight alongside the X-Men. Despite his age, Grammer will use motion capture technology, allowing Beast to fully embrace his animalistic side, move on all fours, and deliver a strong message to Doctor Doom and anyone else who threatens the X-Men.

Beast will probably appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming X-Men relaunch, given his long history as a core member of the team in the comics. Marvel could hold off on fully utilizing Kelsey Grammer’s portrayal and instead focus on introducing a younger version of the character later on. Regardless, Beast’s iconic blue appearance will finally be showcased, and a surprising character is responsible for making that happen.

Gen V Season 2 is streaming on Prime Video.
