As a huge cinema fan, I always think about how *Jurassic Park* really set the standard for dinosaur movies. But did you know that before he created that massive franchise with the original *Jurassic Park* in ’93, Steven Spielberg was involved with another fantastic dinosaur film? It’s an animated movie from 1988 and it’s a much sweeter story – honestly, it’s still one of the best dinosaur movies ever made. With everyone eagerly awaiting the streaming release of *Jurassic World Rebirth* after its huge box office success, it’s great news that this other classic dinosaur film is now available on Netflix as well, starting this September!
As a lifelong movie fan, I was thrilled to see *The Land Before Time* pop up on Netflix on September 1st! This Don Bluth classic – with Spielberg as an executive producer, which is always a good sign – is a real gem from 1988. It tells the story of Littlefoot, a young Apatosaurus who loses his mother and then bravely sets out to find the legendary Great Valley, a safe haven for his kind. Along the way, he meets some wonderful friends, like Cera, and they all share an incredible adventure. The voice acting is fantastic too, featuring talents like Judith Barsi, Burke Byrnes, and a whole host of other great performers.
Why You Should Watch The Land Before Time
The Land Before Time remains a classic animated film from the 1980s, and it’s easy to see why. With stunning animation and a memorable soundtrack, the movie expertly combines an exciting adventure with a touching story that appeals to everyone. The characters are instantly endearing, and their quest to find their home is a relatable journey filled with themes of friendship, cooperation, and the will to survive, adding real emotional weight to the film.
While not as groundbreaking as Steven Spielberg’s *Jurassic Park* a few years later, *The Land Before Time* was a significant success. Made for just $12.3 million, the film earned $84.5 million worldwide, proving popular with audiences. Critics generally liked it too, giving it a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers rated it even higher at 79%. Even decades later, *The Land Before Time* is still considered a beloved animated classic, enjoyed by both new and returning viewers of all ages.
Other Family-Friendly Movies Now on Netflix
Netflix has a great selection of family-friendly movies and shows coming to its platform in September 2025. Starting September 1st, viewers can enjoy classics like *The Land Before Time*, *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*, *Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory*, *Paddington*, and *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial*. Plus, almost all of the *Shrek* movies are now available to stream. On September 8th, Netflix released a new animated special based on *Dr. Seuss’s Red Fish, Blue Fish*, with two more Dr. Seuss adaptations planned for October and November.
