Lately, Marvel Studios seems to be making some significant errors. Their heavy reliance on Kang as the central villain for several phases has backfired, not only hindering the progress of Phases 4 and 5 but also disrupting plans for Phase 6. Even promising individual films haven’t resonated with audiences. The biggest disappointment was *Eternals*, which introduced powerful new heroes but failed to launch a successful franchise. Fortunately, Marvel is still strong when it comes to team-up movies.
The movie *Thunderbolts* will feature the New Avengers, and they’ll team up with the Fantastic Four at the beginning of *Avengers: Doomsday*. The X-Men will also appear in *Doomsday*, but the biggest uncertainty surrounds the team Sam Wilson is putting together. If they’re not careful, this new team risks making the same mistake the MCU has made before.
The MCU Sets Sam Wilson Up for a Big Role in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Following the battle against the Chitauri and Loki in *The Avengers*, Earth’s heroes went their separate ways. However, new threats soon emerged: Iron Man clashed with The Mandarin, Thor battled the Dark Elves, and Captain America discovered that HYDRA, a dangerous organization he thought he defeated decades ago, had secretly been growing within S.H.I.E.L.D. With their plan, Project Insight, finished, HYDRA was poised to launch a major attack. Captain America, with help from Black Widow and his new ally, the Falcon, worked to stop them, ultimately destroying all of HYDRA’s airborne weapons. The Winter Soldier also played a crucial role, saving Captain America’s life during a dangerous fall.
When Steve learns his old friend is still alive, he starts looking for him, and Sam agrees to help. However, in *Avengers: Age of Ultron*, Cap’s priority shifts to taking down the remaining HYDRA forces with the other Avengers, leaving the search for his friend on the back burner. While Bucky is briefly mentioned at a party early in the film, Falcon doesn’t get fully involved until the massive battle in Sokovia. By then, the Avengers finally accept him as a core member, but it feels like too little, too late. Years later, the show *Doomsday* presents a similar situation with one of its own characters.
The New Falcon Can’t Get the Short End of the Stick in Avengers: Doomsday

After Steve Rogers passes on his shield, Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, needs a reliable partner. He finds one in Joaquin Torres, who quickly proves his worth fighting the Flag Smashers in *The Falcon and the Winter Soldier*. By the time of *Captain America: Brave New World*, Joaquin has become a hero in his own right, earning his own Falcon wings and joining Sam on global missions. However, a battle with The Leader leaves Joaquin seriously injured after he tries to intercept a missile. He ends up in the hospital, but Sam is there when he recovers, offering him an opportunity he can’t refuse.
Even though Sam has doubts about Thaddeus Ross’s idea to rebuild the Avengers, he’s committed to reuniting the team. His first thought is Joaquin, whom he wants to include. Captain America will likely also contact major heroes like Thor, Black Panther, and Ant-Man. Defeating Doctor Doom will require all the power the Marvel Cinematic Universe can muster, and Joaquin deserves a prominent role in the upcoming conflict. His appearance in *Brave New World* hinted at his capabilities, and the franchise should focus on characters who’ve consistently proven themselves, rather than relying solely on established heroes.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
