R-TYPE DX: Music Encore announced for PS4, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC

City Connection will release *R-TYPE DX: Music Encore* on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam this winter.

R-TYPE DX: Music Encore is a remastered version of the classic 1999 handheld game, R-TYPE DX. It includes the original R-TYPE and R-TYPE II, and a unique ‘Ultimate Challenge’ mode where you can play both games back-to-back.

Remember wondering what it would be like if each level had its own unique music, like in classic arcade games? That dream is now a reality! In the new “Ultimate Challenge” mission, spanning from the First to the Second Bydo Mission, you can experience this with completely new music!

“Ultimate Challenge” is the first version to include the complete soundtrack. Where the original game used repeated music, we’ve added new, stage-specific tracks that perfectly match the arcade experience. Now, each stage features the same music as it did in the arcade.

The music, created by retro game sound expert WASi303, perfectly captures the feel of classic handheld games. It uses original sound chips from those systems, delivering a truly authentic and yet surprisingly new listening experience.

In the year 220X, humanity witnessed true darkness!!

The first encounter with extraterrestrial life to be recorded in cosmic history.

In an alternate dimension hundreds of light-years away lies the Bydo Empire.

What humanity saw there were alien beings overflowing with hatred and bloodlust.

The future of humankind rested on the outcome of the battle – would they survive, or face extinction? Their only hope lay in wielding the incredible power of the Force!

R-TYPE II Story

Once again, the terrifying Bydo return—their counterattack has begun!

I always thought the Bydo Empire was the scariest threat out there – these guys come from another dimension and just destroy everything! Everyone celebrated when the R-9 fleet supposedly wiped them out, and we all thought we were safe. It was a huge relief at the time.

But it survived.

It had fled to another dimension, regaining its strength in secret.

The Bydo Empire, filled with intense hatred, has broken through the dimensional barrier and is attacking humanity again.

As a countermeasure, humanity launched the advanced R-9 spacecraft, along with its most powerful weapon, the Force.

Ultimate Challenge

Now featuring the brand-new “Music Encore” function.

This story covers the events of both the original R-TYPE and its sequel, R-TYPE II, following the Bydo missions.

Besides the standard score, we also keep track of detailed game data like how often players successfully hit their targets and how many times they used continues.

How far can you make it, and with how few mistakes?

“Ultimate Challenge” is only available in color. However, you can play both *R-TYPE* and *R-TYPE II* in either black and white or color.

We’ve included lots of digital items like original packaging and flyers. Plus, you can complete different challenges and earn achievements to showcase your progress!

Player-Friendly Support Features

New players will feel confident with features like Rewind, Quick Save & Load, and starting with all power-ups unlocked. Plus, you can easily enable rapid-fire shooting!

About R-TYPE DX

R-TYPE DX brought the classic arcade games R-TYPE and R-TYPE II to portable devices. It also included a special mode called “Ultimate Challenge” where players could play through both games consecutively, offering a new way to enjoy the series.

This updated version of *R-TYPE DX: Music Encore* features all-new music tracks imagined as if they could have existed at the game’s original release. It also includes modern features to provide a more polished and immersive experience for players.
