The BBC has shared some initial photos from ‘Small Prophets,’ a new six-episode comedy series created by, directed by, and featuring Mackenzie Crook.
Fans of The Detectorists will recognize Gordon, played by an actor whose name is not mentioned, as the manager of a hardware store. We’re also getting a first look at Pearce Quigley as Michael Sleep, the show’s quirky main character who also works there, alongside Lauren Patel as his coworker Kacey, and comedy icon Sir Michael Palin as Michael’s father, Brian.
New photos have been shared announcing the show will air on BBC Two and be available on BBC iPlayer in 2026. Sophie Willan, Jon Pointing, and Paul Kaye will also be appearing in the series.
The show was filmed in and around Manchester, and that’s where the story takes place. It also includes animated segments, but we haven’t seen those yet.

The series introduces us to Michael Sleep, a quirky man played by Quigley, whose beloved partner, Clea, vanished seven years prior.
Since those events, Sleep has been living a normal life. He enjoys simple things like eating cereal, works at a hardware store, and occasionally visits his father, Brian Palin. He still holds out hope that Clea will come back.

Brian once revealed a strange old recipe calling for ingredients like rainwater and horse manure, mixed with a bit of magic. Armed with this recipe, Sleep cautiously began trying to create Homunculi – magical spirits believed to be able to foresee the future.
Sleep finds an unexpected friend in Kacey Patel, a young coworker. Their bond develops, in part, because they both dislike their manager, Gordon Crook.
The growing bond between them only fuels the curiosity and annoyance of their nosy neighbors, Willan and Pointing, who are determined to uncover the mystery surrounding the garden shed.
Clea’s brother, Roy Kaye, is struggling financially and has reappeared in Michael’s life hoping to reclaim their family home. He believes his sister, Clea, isn’t coming back.

Mackenzie Crook is recognized for his acting work in shows like The Office and Detectorists. He was also a writer and director on Detectorists, and starred in it with Toby Jones.
