Prime Video Streaming One of the Best Horror Movie Prequels of All-Time (And the Rest of the Series Is Hard to Find)

Prime Video recently added a horror prequel that’s actually quite good. Horror prequels often disappoint – think of movies like *Exorcist: The Beginning* and *Paranormal Activity 3* – but a film released last year managed to breathe new life into a franchise that’s been around for decades.

Starting September 1st, you can watch the prequel to the horror film *The Omen*, titled *The First Omen* (2024), on Prime Video. This is the first film directed by Arkasha Stevenson, and it tells the story of how Damien’s story began. The movie follows Margaret, played by Nell Tiger Free, a young American woman who discovers a frightening plot at a Catholic orphanage in Rome – a plot to bring about the birth of the Antichrist. *The First Omen* is the sixth installment in *The Omen* series, but unfortunately, the other five films aren’t currently available for streaming and can only be rented or purchased online.

Why You Should Watch The First Omen

Despite being a continuation of a series that began 50 years ago, *The First Omen* successfully breathes new life into the franchise, something previous sequels failed to do. The film respects the story and ideas of the original 1976 *Omen* while adding to its mythology in a way that feels fresh and introduces intriguing new surprises, all to set the scene for the first movie. Director Mike Flanagan skillfully recreates the original’s unsettling atmosphere and chilling visuals, delivering a truly frightening experience. Even if you don’t plan on watching all six films, *The First Omen* works perfectly well as a standalone horror movie.

The latest *Omen* movie is the best the series has seen since the original. Critics loved it, giving it an 83% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it a 61% score. Reviewers and viewers alike praised the strong acting, how well it connected to the first film, and its genuinely scary storyline. The movie also performed well financially, earning $53 million at the box office on a $30 million budget.

Other Horror Movies Now on Prime Video

As a big horror fan, I was thrilled to see *The First Omen* hit Prime Video in September 2025! It wasn’t alone, either. September 1st brought a whole bunch of great titles to Amazon, including *A Monster Calls*, *Children of Men*, *Crimson Peak*, *Machete Kills*, *The Craft*, and *Winchester*. Definitely a good month for spooky movie nights!

Okay, horror fans, let’s talk about what’s new on Prime Video this September. Honestly, the lineup isn’t *huge* compared to what other streaming services are offering, but don’t worry, there’s still some spooky content to check out. Prime Video already has a solid collection of scary movies like *My Bloody Valentine*, *Piranha 3D*, *Rings*, the original *Frozen* (yes, the horror one!), *Terrifier 2* for those who like it extreme, the delightfully cheesy *Killer Clowns from Outer Space*, and *28 Months After*. So, while September’s additions might be light, the platform is definitely a good place to find a fright!
