Hades 2’s Metacritic Score Makes It the Frontrunner for Game of the Year

Supergiant Games, the creators of the acclaimed game *Hades*, have released *Hades 2* after a successful period in Early Access. The game is now available on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC, launching on September 25th. Early reviews are incredibly positive, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the highest-rated games of the year. This marks the first time the developer has created a sequel to one of its titles.

Hades 2 made a strong impression during its Early Access period, demonstrating a polished game with plenty of potential. Now that the full version is out, players are seeing what Supergiant Games can achieve building on the success of the original Hades. The first Hades received widespread critical acclaim with a Metacritic score of 93, and early reviews suggest Hades 2 is even better. Currently, Hades 2 boasts a Metacritic score of 94, with the Switch and PC versions slightly ahead at 95 and 96 respectively.

Hades 2 Could Snag 2025’s Highest Metacritic Rating Yet

Initial reviews for *Hades 2*, including ours, were published as soon as the review embargo lifted. More reviews are still coming out and will be added to aggregate scores over the next few days, so the current Metacritic score of 94 isn’t final. However, it’s a great indication that *Hades 2* could be among the best-rated games of 2025. Right now, only the Switch 2 versions of *Tears of the Kingdom* and *Breath of the Wild* have higher scores on Metacritic, but since those aren’t new games, *Hades 2* is likely to become the highest-rated new release of the year.

Critics are enjoying *Hades 2*, and its high score reflects that. Considering the original *Hades* won several awards, including Best Independent Game, this isn’t entirely unexpected. Still, it’s rare for a sequel to be as good as – or even better than – the first game.

Hades 2 builds on the success of the original Hades, and it really shows. It’s expected to be a major contender for awards this year, potentially winning several, just like Zagreus did in 2020. However, the competition is tough, with many other highly anticipated games releasing. This has been a particularly strong year for independent titles, as games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Hollow Knight: Silksong are also vying for Game of the Year. Both of those games have received very high scores – 93 and 92 on Metacritic – putting them all as strong contenders.

Okay, so 2025 is still looking packed with big game releases! Honestly, there’s a chance something else – maybe another surprise hit like *Ghosts of Yotei* – could knock *Hades 2* off the top of the Metacritic charts. Speaking of *Hades 2*, it’s coming to Switch, the new Switch 2 (if that’s really happening!), and PC on September 25th. And good news for those of us already playing the Early Access version – the full 1.0 update will be a free download when it launches!
