Skate 4: How to Smith

Skate 4 offers a huge variety of tricks, both classic and new, for players to learn. You might discover some tricks not covered in the tutorial, and they can be hard to find in the game’s encyclopedia. One of those could be the Smith grind. This guide will teach you how to perform it and help you complete the daily Trick challenge.

What is the Smith?

A Smith grind involves lowering the front truck of your skateboard while keeping the back truck rolling on the rail or ledge. Essentially, your front truck hangs off the side while the back truck drives you forward.

Steps to the Smith

Xbox

  1. You have to somehow get onto the rail, curb, or ledge. Most can do this by performing an ollie. An ollie is your left stick down, then up + right trigger.
  2. As soon as you land on the object, you will push the right stick up and then right.
  3. Now, adjust your left stick slightly away from the obstacle. This will dip your front truck to the side and a bit downwards.
  4. If you want to exit out of it, you can ollie or just ride off the rail.

Playstation

  1. You have to somehow get onto the rail, curb, or ledge. Most can do this by performing an ollie. An ollie is your left stick down, then up + R2.
  2. As soon as you land on the object, or even in midair, you will push the right stick up and then right.
  3. Now, adjust your left stick slightly away from the obstacle. This will dip your front truck to the side and a bit downwards.
  4. If you want to exit out of it, you can ollie or just ride off the rail.

Tips

  • The right stick input has to be executed quite sharply. Only moving it a bit will register a completely different move.
  • Balance is everything. You have to ensure your weight is properly distributed in a way that keeps your weight on the back truck, while slightly dipping the front nose.

It might take a few tries to learn the move, but once you get it, you’ll be able to do it consistently.
