Science fiction excels at transporting us to imaginative new worlds, and when combined with romance, it often delivers grand, emotionally resonant adventures. But what happens when you add epic scope, thrilling action, and mature themes? You get *Galactic*. This new comic, written by Curt Pires with art by Amilcar Pinna, launches in November from DSTLRY and is a wildly entertaining, adults-only story. While perfect for *Star Wars* fans, it also carries a similar energy to *Saga* and is simply a fantastic read.
Let’s address this right away: the creators of *Galactic* say it’s what would happen if George Lucas and Quentin Tarantino collaborated, and they’re spot on. From the start, *Galactic* #1 feels like a wild, loving tribute to *Star Wars* – imagine the famous cantina scene, but much more intense. The comic is filled with nods to the iconic sci-fi franchise, from the charming rogue Jecht Marco and his talking dog pilot, Wolf, to the unique alien creations and a princess who definitely doesn’t need rescuing. The visuals and themes create a familiar, yet exciting, experience for readers.

Galactic #1 Is a Familiar Tale, But One That Charts Its Own Path
It’s hard to talk about the story of *Galactic* #1 without giving things away, but it’s more than just a *Star Wars* or *True Romance* retread. While it initially feels similar to those stories, it quickly expands, even incorporating elements of *Game of Thrones* with political backstabbing and a genuinely unsettling villain who raises the tension. Though parts of it are somewhat predictable, that doesn’t detract from the overall experience. This first issue primarily establishes the groundwork, showing that, at its heart, this is a love story – but it rapidly evolves into a war story as well, from Jecht’s point of view.

Beyond the story itself, the book’s artwork is striking. Pinna’s illustrations have a grand, cinematic quality, with each page and panel feeling like a scene from a film. This is particularly noticeable in the detailed panels, which utilize angles and perspectives that mimic camera work. This creates an immersive experience for the reader, making them feel like they’re living the story rather than just reading it. The art is skillfully executed and effectively balances the story’s more mature and intense themes.

The only slight weakness of *Galactic* #1 is that it occasionally feels like its mature content – violence and sexuality – is both emphasized for shock value and used to distinguish itself from the stories it’s inspired by. While this approach is effective, it sometimes disrupts the story’s otherwise quick pace and smooth flow. It’s important to note the book clearly establishes its mature themes from the start and doesn’t hold back.
Overall, *Galactic* #1 is a thrilling and exciting comic. It cleverly draws inspiration from a popular sci-fi franchise but boldly takes it in a mature and unpredictable direction. This promises a dark and compelling story that brings something new to the sci-fi comic world. It’s a genuinely fun read, and even if the mature themes aren’t for you, you’ll still find yourself captivated by the adventure.
FOC for Galactic #1 is October 6th.
