One of the Best Horror Movies of the 2010s Returns to Streaming (And It Has Major Marvel Connections)

It’s rare for a horror movie to be considered truly the best, but one film from the 2010s achieved that status. Widely praised as a brilliant example of horror filmmaking, it offers a fresh take on the genre and is now available to stream just in time for Halloween. Interestingly, it also has an unexpected link to the Marvel universe.

Starting September 1st, HBO Max subscribers can stream the popular 2011 horror movie, *The Cabin in the Woods*. The film stars Chris Hemsworth (before his role in *Thor*) along with Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, and Jesse Williams as a group of college friends whose weekend trip to a secluded cabin turns into a terrifying ordeal. Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Amy Acker, and Sigourney Weaver also feature in the movie, which was written by Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon – the director behind the first two *Avengers* films – and produced by Whedon.

Why You Should Watch The Cabin in the Woods

The Cabin in the Woods is a clever film that both honors and playfully pokes fun at the horror genre. It takes classic horror tropes and turns them on their head, while still clearly demonstrating a love and understanding of what makes horror films work. What starts as a typical slasher movie quickly becomes something much more surprising and thought-provoking, thanks to its clever twists and strong performances. It’s a truly innovative horror film that stays with viewers long after it ends.

Even over ten years after it came out, *The Cabin in the Woods* is still considered a standout horror film and a clever take on the genre. It has a 92% approval rating from critics and a 74% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While it wasn’t a major box office success, the film earned $66.5 million worldwide on a $30 million budget and won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film.

Other Horror Movies Now on HBO Max

Several horror films are now available on HBO Max, including *The Cabin in the Woods*. *Evil Dead II*, *Misery*, *Mystery Street*, and *Se7en* joined the platform on September 1st.

While HBO Max doesn’t have many new horror releases planned for September 2025, it already offers a large collection of scary movies. Currently, you can stream titles like *It Follows*, *Companion*, *A Nightmare on Elm Street*, *Midsommar*, *The Silence of the Lambs*, and *Evil Dead Rise*, plus the entire *Conjuring* series. Fans can also enjoy both *It* and *It: Chapter Two* before the *Welcome to Derry* series arrives.
