As a lifelong sci-fi fan, I’ve always known it’s a genre that just *sticks*. What I love is that because it’s all about imagining ‘what if?’, it really lets creators get wild with their ideas. And when sci-fi is done well, it builds incredibly loyal fan communities. Over the years, sci-fi has changed a lot, spreading into movies, books, games – you name it. But for me, TV has always been a sweet spot. Shows like *Star Trek* and *The Twilight Zone* proved sci-fi could really connect with a wide audience. By the 90s, it felt like sci-fi was starting to really understand who it was speaking to, and different shows began to cater to very specific interests.
A lot of science fiction TV shows from the 1990s still hold up remarkably well today. While the special effects weren’t as sophisticated as those that came later, the decade produced some truly excellent sci-fi programs with talented actors. These shows were so popular that they made some actors household names in the 90s. Unfortunately, many of those stars faded from public view after their time on these series.
5) Sabrina Lloyd – Sliders

I remember being really into *Sliders* back in the ’90s, and even though it’s not as popular now, it’s still a beloved sci-fi show for a lot of us. Sabrina Lloyd was a big part of it – she played Wade Welles, the tech expert, for the first three seasons and then made a quick return in the last one. It was surprising to see her step away from acting after *Sliders* ended in 1999. She took on a few roles, including a main part on the first season of *Numb3rs*, but eventually retired altogether. Her last acting job was in the 2013 comedy *The Pretty One*.
4) Jane Curtin – 3rd Rock from the Sun

I’ve been a fan of Jane Curtin for ages, and people often forget just how established she was *before* the nineties. She really broke out as one of the very first cast members on *Saturday Night Live* back in 1975, and she kept working steadily in some great parts. But I think most people recognize her best as Mary Albright on *3rd Rock from the Sun* – her chemistry with John Lithgow was fantastic! That show was a huge hit, and honestly, it felt like the peak of her career, making her a truly recognizable face. It’s funny, because *3rd Rock* is now seen as a bit of a hidden gem, but after that, she seemed to fade from major roles. She’s still working in film and TV, which is great, but she hasn’t had quite the same level of visibility since her time on that hilarious sci-fi comedy.
3) Richard Dean Anderson – Stargate SG-1

Stargate SG-1 is a beloved science fiction series that expanded on the original Stargate movie and launched a still-popular franchise. Though many of the show’s actors have continued to thrive in their careers, the show’s main male star hasn’t received as much recognition as he probably should.
Richard Dean Anderson was a key part of the show from the start and played a big role in making it popular. Since then, he’s mostly stayed with the *Stargate* series, and hasn’t appeared in many other projects. Because *Stargate* isn’t as well-known now, it seems like a major sci-fi star of the 1990s has become less visible.
2) Cleavant Derricks – Sliders

Although *Sliders* has a dedicated fanbase, many of its actors haven’t continued to appear frequently on television. Cleavant Derricks, who played Rembrandt Brown throughout all five seasons, was a constant presence on the show and is strongly associated with it by fans. However, despite *Sliders*’ popularity, Derricks hasn’t taken on any major roles since the series ended, making it his most well-known work.
1) Nicholas Brendon – Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t just a television show; it was a cultural hit. It cleverly blended horror, fantasy, and science fiction into a fun and creative series, and its memorable characters made it both popular and genuinely spooky. Though many of the show’s actors went on to successful careers, Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, is a notable exception. Since Buffy ended, Brendon’s personal struggles have overshadowed his acting work, and he’s largely disappeared from television.
