6 Years Later, A Highly-Anticipated Marvel Hero Finally Makes Their MCU Debut, And Their Fate Is Shocking

Marvel Studios consistently introduces fresh and compelling characters with each new project. This year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe welcomed both lesser-known figures like The Sentry, alongside highly anticipated heroes such as the Fantastic Four and Red Hulk. This trend extends to their television shows as well, with Marvel adapting iconic characters for live-action and animated series. The series *Daredevil: Born Again* introduced the villain Muse, and this year’s *Ironheart* featured the arrival of Mephisto, a major figure in Marvel lore. Their latest release marks a character debut that has been six years in the making.

Following the huge success of *Avengers: Endgame* at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, Marvel Studios felt like it was on top of the world. During that presentation, they announced several exciting upcoming projects, including movies like *Thor: Love and Thunder*, *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, and *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness*. They also unveiled their plans for Disney+ shows such as *WandaVision*, *Loki*, and *Hawkeye*. Perhaps the most anticipated announcement was that Mahershala Ali would be playing Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, with the release of *Marvel Zombies*, Blade has finally arrived in the MCU, though with a few caveats and, be warned, there are spoilers ahead.

The MCU’s Blade Finally Debuts, But Not How You Expect

It wasn’t shocking to see Blade in *Marvel Zombies* – Marvel had already announced he’d be a key character. However, this animated version of Blade is quite different from the live-action one we expect. While the character’s design is based on Mahershala Ali, who is set to play Blade in a future movie, Todd Williams actually provides the voice for Blade in the animated series. And that’s just the beginning of how they differ.

In Marvel Zombies, Blade remains half-vampire, but he gains a significant new role: he becomes the Moon Knight. While most fans associate Moon Knight with Marc Spector, the title has actually been held by several heroes in Marvel comics. The series reveals that Spector died during the zombie outbreak, prompting the Egyptian god Khonshu to choose Blade as his new champion.

Fans will likely be pleased with how Blade fights in the series. Throughout all four episodes, he uses his signature weapons to defeat numerous zombie heroes, including a notable battle with Ghost and a quick strike against a zombified Hank Pym in the finale. However, Blade surprisingly meets his end, being destroyed by Scarlet Witch’s chaos magic during the final fight. Fortunately, this probably won’t be the last we see of Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What’s Next for Blade in the MCU?

It’s been six years since Mahershala Ali was announced to play Blade. Interestingly, he already appeared in a Marvel film – his voice was featured in a post-credit scene in *Eternals*. However, the studio hasn’t followed up on that scene or explained its significance yet.

The Blade movie has faced numerous setbacks over the years, with multiple directors and writers coming and going. Several actors, including Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre, were initially cast but later left the project. Pierre eventually joined the cast of the HBO series *Lanterns* as Green Lantern John Stewart while the Blade film remained in development.

Marvel fans are still waiting for news about the *Blade* movie. It’s been a year since we last heard anything official – the film was removed from Disney’s schedule – but given Blade’s nature, it feels like the project is still quietly happening somewhere.
