Burnout isn’t a recent problem, and it affects people in all professions, including acting. Several well-known actors, like Eliza Dushku (from *Buffy The Vampire Slayer*), the late Gene Hackman (*Superman: The Movie*), and Rick Moranis (*Honey, I Shrunk The Kids*), have chosen to leave acting to explore other paths – some have become writers or therapists, while others have simply prioritized family life.
Frank Dillane, who played Nick Clark in *Fear the Walking Dead* for four seasons, recently shared his regrets about how his time on the show ended. He starred alongside Kim Dickens and Alycia Debnam-Carey as a member of the Clark family, and in a new interview with Empire magazine, Dillane discussed why he wishes he had left the series differently.
Why Frank Dillane Left Fear The Walking Dead
During an interview after leaving *Fear The Walking Dead*, the actor revealed he hadn’t ever truly been satisfied with his work on the show.
I disagree with my earlier statement about Frank. I believe Nick has truly resonated with viewers – perhaps even more than any other character I’ve created. People still reach out to tell me how meaningful he was to them, which is incredibly rewarding. But that makes me wonder, what led to Matt Dillane’s decision to leave the show?
He requested to leave the show. He explained that the constant darkness – dealing with addiction, death, and violence – had become draining. He was eager to take on new roles and explore different kinds of stories. After four seasons, he also felt a sense of disappointment with acting itself, to the point where he considered quitting altogether and pursuing a completely different path. He remembers thinking, “I don’t *have* to do this anymore; I can do something else.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dillane explained that making television is demanding due to the long shooting schedules. He also expressed feeling homesick, as he’s not American and missed being in Europe. He felt the show had reached a natural conclusion after a few seasons and decided it was time to pursue other projects.
He admitted he didn’t have a lot of skills outside of his hobbies. “I mostly just play music and write,” he said, “I’m not really good at much else, to be honest.”
Wow, Nick’s ending on Fear the Walking Dead really got to me! I’m still processing it, honestly. I’d love to hear what everyone else thought – share your reactions in the comments below!
