I’m really into Silent Hill f, and honestly, keeping track of everything to upgrade your character is tough! There’s so much to explore. I found this awesome guide that shows you where to find all 22 Character Upgrades – they’re called Ema in the game – so you don’t miss a single one.
Achievements (Trophies)
There’s only one trophy you get for each Ema you discover. To earn the “Close to the Sun” trophy, you’ll need to find all 18 Emas. Each Ema is a wooden plaque decorated with bird artwork, and collecting them will increase:
- Stamina
- Sanity
- Health
- Omamori Slots
You will use Ema plaques at a Hokora Shrine, with Faith.
You might notice there are 22 Ema available, but you only need 18 to unlock the achievement. This is because the Omamori Slots don’t count towards the trophy requirements.
Okay, so heads up – you’re gonna have to replay this game a bunch. To get all 22 collectibles, or at least the 18 you need for that trophy, prepare for multiple playthroughs. It’s a grind, but worth it if you’re a completionist like me!
First Playthrough
Ebisugaoka Second Visit
Ema 1
Travel east along the road. Before you get to the Hokora Shrine, stop about a house short of it. You’ll find the Ema almost directly opposite the Shrine.
Ema 2
To complete Ema #2, you need to navigate through the Storehouse and make your escape. Just before reaching Rinko’s house, you’ll find another house with a field nearby. The Character Upgrade is located outside this house, on a trough.
Corridors
Ema 3
Head to the northwest section of the hallways. You’ll find a door with an Inari-sama symbol on it, though you can’t open it right now. The Ema is located on a box next to that door.
Ebisugaoka Third Visit
Ema 4
To find Rinko and Shu, go through the house and then jump out the window, heading east. You’ll see a path to Hokora Shrine, but don’t take it. Instead, cross the bridge and continue along the other path.
This path leads to a dead end where monsters hide. You’ll find Ema sitting on a stone wall, tucked away in a small corner.
Worship Hall
Ema 5
You can find this Character Upgrade near the area with Shu’s Memories Puzzle. From the main room, head west and pull the blue and red lever. After going through the blue door, you’ll enter a lit hallway. Walk down the hallway and turn left to find a plaque on a tall table.
Ebisugaoka Fourth Visit
Ema 6
This item is easy to find while heading to the mountain refuge. Look for it on a rock nestled among the trees. Your map should show two paths circling the rock, making it easy to spot – it’s located just before the path descends to the refuge.
Main Hall
Ema 7
After finishing the third ritual, you can find secret rooms by pressing and holding the L2 button when you’re near them. To reach one of these rooms, head to the main hall and go to the west side. The Ema is located in the room right next to where you got the Crow Omamori – it’s on the right as soon as you enter.
This room also contains other collectibles, including a document required to unlock certain trophies. If you’re aiming for 100% completion in Silent Hill f, check out our guide to finding all the documents.
Ema 8
As you head towards Hinako’s house, you’ll come across the first Hokora Shrine. Continue past the shrine, then turn left (east on the map) and walk to the end of the street. You’ll find the Ema on a bench to your left.
Shimizu Residence
Ema 9
You’ll find this Ema inside the Calendar, which is located in the second area of the Shimizu Residence. The Calendar is in the southern part of the residence, in the room to the left as you enter from the hallway (when viewing the map). It’s on a raised platform with a green glow.
Ema 10
Return to the Calendar to unlock the next part of the house. Head west past Hinako’s parents’ room, all the way to the end of the hall. You’ll find Ema near a watering can.
Ebisugaoka Sixth Visit
Ema 11
Get ready for a battle. Head back to the truck you were at before, but this time turn right. Follow the path until you spot a red barrel directly across from a Hokora Shrine – the Ema will be there.
Second Playthrough
You’ve unlocked the brooch! Now you can open Inari-sama Boxes and Doors, letting you discover Ema that were previously hidden.
Ebisugaoka First Visit
Ema 12
Once you’ve completed the first Hokora Shrine, head down the steps and turn right. You’ll find a small area with a box on the ground. Open the box to find this plaque, along with a document.
Shrine Path
Ema 13
As you solve the Shrine Vault Puzzle, a new area will open up to the southeast. Choose the left path, and you’ll find a Character Upgrade sitting on a rock further along that path.
Ebisugaoka Second Visit
Ema 14
On the east side of your map, you’ll find a Hokora Shrine along a main road. Immediately after passing the shrine, turn left into a small garden. Inside, you’ll find a box containing the document you’re looking for.
Ebisugaoka Third Visit
Ema 15
This one is a bit more hidden.
As you head south on the map towards the middle school, you’ll come across some alleyways. After you see the Hokora Shrine, go up the stairs and turn left. Walk around the outside of one building, then behind another building on your left, and you’ll find the plaque resting on a stool.
Worship Hall
Ema 16
This one is also a bit tricky to access.
Head south on the map and down the hallway. You’ll find a narrow opening on your left – squeeze through it. Continue straight, then turn right at the first opportunity. The Ema should be on the desk inside.
Ebisugaoka Fourth Visit
Ema 17
Climb the stairs until you reach the gazebo. Then, walk to its left side, and you’ll find a box near some stones.
Main Hall
Ema 18
Head up the stairs shown on the east side of your map. Then, walk down the long hallway. Carefully go around the large room, avoiding the holes in the floor, and enter the doorway on the right.
Turn left and go through a door, which will take you down a set of steps that lead to the outside.
Okay, so once you’re out there, head across those little bridges, sticking to the left side. You’ll eventually see a path leading to the right – take it! That path leads straight to the building up above. Once you’re inside, the Character Upgrade is on top of one of the cabinets – you’ll see a bunch of them, so just look for the one with the upgrade on top!
Ebisugaoka Fifth Visit
Ema 19
After walking through the park, you’ll see a house just before a small shrine. Look for a box sitting in the yard on the left.
Shimizu Residence
Ema 20
Once you navigate through the house, you can get to this Ema.
Begin by heading west down the first hallway. After you reach a door, continue straight – passing two rooms – to find the box. It’s on top of a stack of other boxes, so look closely!
Treasure Hall
Ema 21
Once you’ve collected two crests, you’ll find a puzzle room filled with fox statues to earn your third. Inside, turn right and go through the Inari-sama door. You’ll find the plaque at the back right of that room.
Third Playthrough
Ebisugaoka Fifth Visit
Ema 22
After leaving the park, you’ll be challenged to a battle. Once that’s over, head up the stairs and turn right onto the path. Continue along this path until you see Ema sitting on a rock to your left and an old stone statue of Jizo directly in front of you.
You’ve now collected all the Ema in the game, which fully upgrades your character! This should have unlocked the “Close to the Sun” trophy. It’s just one more achievement as you work towards completing everything in the game.
