For decades, horror movies have featured strong female survivors – known as “Final Girls” – like Laurie Strode from *Halloween*, Sidney Prescott from *Scream*, and Ellen Ripley from *Alien*. These characters face off against terrifying villains, and a recent one might be the best yet. The trend is generally considered to have begun in 1974 with Jess Bradford from *Black Christmas* and Sally Hardesty from *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre*, and continues today with characters like Maxine Minx from *X* and Sienna Shaw from *Terrifier*. A particularly impactful horror film from the 2010s, which introduced a standout Final Girl, is now available to stream again.
The popular horror film *You’re Next* is now available to stream on Peacock. Released in the 2010s, it’s known for its strong female lead, Erin, who unexpectedly finds herself fighting for survival when a group of masked attackers target her boyfriend’s family reunion. Directed by Adam Wingard, the movie features Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, A. J. Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Barbara Crampton, and Rob Moran, and became available on the NBCUniversal streaming service on September 1st.
Why You Should Watch You’re Next
If you enjoyed horror movies like *Ready or Not* and *The Strangers*, you’ll probably love *You’re Next*. It takes the suspense and intensity of home invasion thrillers – with some really inventive and shocking kills – and mixes in a clever, dark sense of humor. It’s a genuinely chilling, thrilling, and fun movie that you’ll want to watch multiple times.
What really sets *You’re Next* apart is how it brilliantly flips the typical “Final Girl” stereotype. Instead of portraying the heroine as a helpless victim, the movie shows Erin as surprisingly capable and fiercely determined. She doesn’t just fight back – she actively hunts her attackers, completely changing the power dynamic and making you passionately support her. This redefines the “Final Girl” as a strong, deadly character. Unlike traditional horror heroines who passively wait to be rescued or simply survive, Erin takes control of her own fate and fights with incredible skill. She’s a refreshing change of pace and stands out as one of the best final girls in horror, paving the way for many more empowered characters to follow.
