Most Powerful Characters to Wield Thor’s Hammer, Ranked by Strength

Mjolnir, the hammer wielded by Thor, is easily one of the most impressive weapons in comic books. It can focus the power of thunder and lightning, making it incredibly dangerous to enemies. The only requirement to use it is being worthy; if someone isn’t, they can’t even lift it – a real ego boost! While many characters have wielded Mjolnir, even those with questionable ethics, it consistently amplifies strength. Even characters who aren’t naturally powerful can become formidable with Mjolnir, and those who are already strong become even more so.

A warning to anyone opposing Mjolnir and its wielders: they are unlikely to succeed. As long as it remains with worthy individuals, the power of Thor is overwhelming. These characters experienced a small part of that power and used it in a creative way.

7) Captain America (Steve Rogers)

Although Captain America is stronger than a typical person, he isn’t as strong as some mutants or other superheroes. It’s not just about physical strength, however; his admirable character is what truly makes him deserving of his title. When his powers were amplified ten times over, Captain America proved to be one of the most capable individuals to wield Mjolnir. His moral compass and dedication are key to his heroism, and even with limited physical power, he’s a force to be reckoned with.

I honestly think there’s no one who wields it better than Thor or Captain America. If we were ranking them by personality alone, he’d be number one, easily. He might be at the bottom when it comes to pure strength compared to the others, but that doesn’t bother me at all. It doesn’t diminish his value even a little bit. He’s still a fantastic hero.

6) Storm

When Storm temporarily lost her abilities, she unexpectedly gained access to Thor’s power. The hammer restored Ororo to her original strength, though it came with some complications – understandable, considering Loki was the one who offered it. For a short period, Storm regained her former strength and even became more powerful than before.

Though it was only temporary during her time with the Claremont team, she’s continued to wield the hammer in different realities. It’s a fantastic idea, and she’s proven herself to be among the most skilled users of it. Hopefully, she’ll get to use it again someday without the usual limitations.

5) Wonder Woman

You’re not mistaken, Wonder Woman actually wielded Mjolnir in two team-up events between Marvel and DC Comics. She obtained it from Shazam after he defeated Thor, which significantly increased her power. Even with her already impressive abilities, Mjolnir made her the most powerful Amazonian warrior in history. This achievement set her apart from all others of her kind.

It would be amazing to see her battle Thor – that would be a truly great fight in any future crossovers. But, as her name, Wonder, suggests, she’s capable of anything.

4) Beta Ray Bill

Initially introduced as a powerful adversary for Thor, Beta Ray Bill immediately demonstrated he was also worthy to wield Mjolnir. Although they clashed in battle, they quickly recognized their shared values and became allies. Everyone was amazed when Odin bestowed upon Bill his own hammer, called Stormbreaker – not the axe seen in the film, but bearing the same name.

At the time, it was completely unexpected for anyone to be deemed worthy of wielding Thor’s power, and this experience profoundly impacted Bill’s character for years to come. Nowadays, many characters can lift Mjolnir, but Bill was the very first. The fact that he managed it on his first attempt shows just how incredibly powerful he must be. It truly set him apart.

3) Venom

During the King in Black storyline, Eddie Brock, better known as Venom, actually lifted and used Mjolnir. He was granted this power as a way to fight Knull, the god of the symbiotes. Luckily, Eddie and Venom were fighting on the side of the heroes and showed they were worthy enough to wield the hammer.

Seeing Venom use the hammer created one of the most memorable scenes in King in Black-a moment that will stay with us for a long time.

2) Silver Surfer

In a possible future where Thanos was victorious and eliminated all life, the Silver Surfer-specifically, the version known as the Fallen One-was able to lift Mjolnir. This Surfer had proven himself worthy and come to terms with Galactus, ultimately deciding to confront and destroy Thanos once and for all.

He had good intentions, but they weren’t enough. Thanos would ultimately be victorious and enslave the Surfer. While the story concludes sadly, it was still a respectable fight. It’s not a bad outcome for one of the most powerful beings in existence.

1) Superman

That’s right – Superman actually lifted Mjolnir during the famous JLA/Avengers crossover event! Several factors aligned to make it possible, and it served as a great high point in the story. Alongside Captain America’s shield, Superman looked particularly impressive in those scenes, inspiring many fans to sketch him in their notebooks.

Considering he’s the most powerful character in the DC Universe, it’s fitting that he was able to lift Mjolnir. Whether or not it was explained as a change to Odin’s history, it was a really awesome moment in the story. It’s something fans will always remember and appreciate.
