One of the Best Crime Dramas of All Time Is Streaming Free (And It’s as Entertaining as Ever)

A truly great crime drama is now available on a free streaming platform, and it remains compelling even after almost 40 years. Recently, several classic movies have become available on different streaming services, letting viewers enjoy popular films like Inglourious Basterds, Clueless, and Definitely, Maybe. If you’re a film fan searching for a well-made movie that realistically portrays the world of organized crime, you can find it now on Tubi.

Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas became available on Tubi, Fox’s free streaming service, starting September 1st. Based on Nicholas Pileggi’s 1985 book Wiseguy, the film is widely considered a classic gangster movie – often compared to The Godfather – and one of the greatest films ever made. The story follows the life of Henry Hill, a Mafia associate, detailing his relationships with his wife and fellow criminals, as well as his journey from a local criminal to a prominent figure and, ultimately, a witness for the federal government.

Why You Should Watch Goodfellas

As a film lover, I think so much of what makes Goodfellas brilliant comes down to Scorsese. It really was a turning point in his career. He’d already proven himself with films like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, but when Goodfellas came out in 1990, it just *clicked* with critics and brought his unique style to so many more people. It felt like a return to the raw, realistic gangster stories he started with, and it showcased everything he does best – the fast-paced editing, those intense close-ups, the really confident camerawork, and that incredible three-minute tracking shot. That shot, and the way he plays with time – that nonlinear storytelling – has become so recognizable as *his* style, and it all really comes together in Goodfellas to create an incredibly engaging and immersive cinematic experience.

This movie delivers a gripping and realistic look into the world of the mafia, populated by vibrant and memorable characters. Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco, and Paul Sorvino all give outstanding performances. Goodfellas, boasting a 93% critics’ score and a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is considered a cinematic masterpiece and sets the standard for crime films. In 2000, it was recognized for its cultural significance and added to the United States Library of Congress’s National Film Registry for preservation.
