The Simpsons Movie might be getting a sequel! It’s been 20 years since the first film came out, and a recent announcement has fans excited. The Simpsons just started its 37th season on Fox, and Fox has renewed the show for an impressive four more seasons, showing their commitment to adult animation. However, many fans have been hoping for something else: a new feature film. While new episodes are great, a movie would be a different and exciting experience.
Things are getting exciting again! The Simpsons Movie has just announced that a new sequel is officially being made. Set to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027, this new The Simpsons Movie will be released almost exactly 20 years after the original. As of right now, details about the plot are scarce, but the announcement came with a first look poster for the sequel. You can see it below.
The Simpsons Movie Returns With New Sequel 20 Years Later
The Simpsons Movie reached a strange anniversary earlier this spring. Fans noticed that as of March 5th, the amount of time between the movie’s release on July 27, 2007, and that date was the same as the time between the first episode of The Simpsons (which aired on December 27, 1989) and the movie’s premiere. That initial period was almost 6,500 days, and the gap has grown since then. When the next Simpsons movie is released, it will be 20 years since the first film came out-it’s hard to believe!
The Simpsons Movie was quite an achievement, considering the team was simultaneously creating a new film and producing new episodes of the TV show. Series creator Matt Groening has talked about this challenging schedule over the years, and those involved have even suggested it made the idea of a new film seem daunting. Now, with the series approaching Season 40, the fact that another movie is happening feels like everything is falling into place.
Why Did It Take So Long for a New Simpsons Movie?
“The first movie really took a toll on us,” explained The Simpsons creator Matt Groening while speaking at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this past Summer when questioned about a potential new film. “We didn’t have a secondary team; we worked on the movie and continued the series simultaneously.” Groening also shared that the team had a physical clock displaying the remaining time before the deadline, stating, “We even had a countdown clock – we jokingly called it The Simpsons death clock – tracking the months, weeks, days, and seconds until the movie had to be completed. It was incredibly stressful… Ideally, we’d make [another] movie. We’ll see what happens.”
Everything appears to be falling into place, meaning The Simpsons Movie could actually happen, and we might see it become a reality in two years. Considering all of this, the 20-year development process for the new film makes sense. The original film was a huge success for the franchise when it came out, so hopefully this one will be just as good.
