Madonna Details Forgiving Brother Christopher Ciccone Before His Death

Madonna isn’t hung up on her rocky relationship with her late brother.

The famous singer shared how she and Christopher Ciccone worked to rebuild their relationship before he passed away in October 2024, after being distant for many years.

Madonna, 67, shared with Jay Shetty on the September 29th episode of his On Purpose podcast that forgiving even those you consider enemies is crucial. She explained that it was particularly difficult to forgive her brother, who recently passed away, because the most challenging forgiveness often involves those closest to you.”

Oh my gosh, it just *breaks* my heart thinking about it. It all started when Christopher released his book, Life With My Sister Madonna, back in 2008. It caused such a rift between them! But then, even though things were so strained, Madonna had to face everything – all the painful stuff from their past – when Christopher got really sick. It was just awful. She had to confront it all as his health was declining, despite everything that had happened.

“We didn’t talk for a very long time, years and years,” she explained. “It started when he became sick and contacted me, asking for help. I remember thinking, ‘Should I help someone who I considered an enemy?’ That’s really how it felt at the time.”

The Grammy winner (whose full name is Madonna Louise Ciccone) eventually reconciled with her brother or sister, and she shared that it made her feel “so relieved.”

Oh my gosh, just hearing her talk about it… it was like a huge relief for her, she said. Like a massive weight lifted. She’d been carrying so much, and she finally felt like she could just… let it go. She could finally be near him, even with everything happening, and actually hold his hand. And tell him… tell him she loved him and that she forgave him. She kept saying how important that was to her. It just… gets me, you know? It was everything.

Madonna explained that getting sick-she had a bacterial infection that required a stay in the intensive care unit for several days in 2023-motivated her to resolve her longstanding conflict with Christopher.

She remembered feeling like she was very close to death during her medically-induced coma. She had a brief moment of awareness, and her mother appeared to her, asking, ‘Do you want to come with me?’ She told her, ‘No.’

“Eventually, when I woke up,” Madonna explained, “I understood that the ‘No’ meant I needed to forgive people I was still holding grudges against and try to make things right with them.”

Madonna had previously discussed making peace with Christopher shortly before he died at the age of 63, admitting that their relationship hadn’t been simple in recent years.

“It had been a while since we talked, but when my brother became ill, we reconnected,” she shared in a tribute that has since been removed from Instagram. “I’m relieved he’s no longer in pain. He was one of a kind, and I’ll miss him dearly. I imagine he’s dancing happily now.”
