The Lord of the Rings is Reportedly Getting a New Game to “Compete With Hogwarts Legacy”

A new game based on the Lord of the Rings series is in development. Insider Gaming reports that the game is being funded in part by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), with an investment of approximately $100 million. This agreement has been in progress for about a year.

In addition to ADIO, the Lord of the Rings game is being financially supported by several companies, such as Embracer and Revenge. Embracer’s involvement isn’t unexpected, as they’ve owned the rights to the intellectual property since 2022. When asked about this, the company stated, “As a general rule, we do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

Although a new Lord of the Rings game hasn’t been officially announced, a title currently in development is anticipated to be revealed “soon”, according to a report from Insider Gaming, potentially as early as next week. The report also indicated that the game will be a third-person action title, created with the goal of “competing with Hogwarts Legacy”. This suggests it will likely be a large, open-world adventure game as well.

The Lord of the Rings series has been adapted into many video games over the years. These range from older strategy titles like the Battle for Middle-earth games, to team-based online battle arenas (MOBAs), and even large-scale online role-playing games like The Lord of the Rings Online. In the last ten years, we’ve also had action-adventure games such as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its follow-up, Shadow of War. More recently, players have enjoyed the stealth-focused adventure game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, and the relaxing life simulation game Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game.

Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game launched in July and is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. You can find a more in-depth look at the game in our review.

A fresh and engaging addition to the series came with 2923’s The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. The game put players in the boots of Dwarves stranded within the mines of Moria after a failed effort to reclaim their underground city. Gameplay centered around surviving and building, and players were motivated to explore a constantly-changing Moria and its caves to find resources for crafting.

2023 unfortunately brought us the poorly received game, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. As you might expect, players control Gollum as he searches for his beloved “precious” – the One Ring. The game’s story happens before Gollum meets Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins, who are on their journey to destroy the Ring.
