Peacemaker Director Finally Reveals the Sons of Liberty’s End Goal

Peacemaker‘s Sons of Liberty are fighting for a single, central purpose, according to the show’s director. Peacemaker Season 2 is presenting some of the most intense and somber material DC has ever produced, and Episode 6 took the story in an unexpected direction by introducing a new alternate dimension. A frightening new group, the Sons of Liberty, quickly became important to the plot when they first appeared.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn (who is also directing some episodes of Peacemaker Season 2) has discussed the core purpose of the Sons of Liberty within the show’s storyline. As Peacemaker Season 2 introduces a fresh group of heroes, it also features several new villains, including the Sons of Liberty. Although this team doesn’t last long in the narrative, their objective will have lasting consequences.

In a conversation with Brandon Davis from Phase Hero, James Gunn discussed the Sons of Liberty and where they fit – or don’t fit – as traditional heroes or villains. He acknowledged that they are “still kind of terrorists,” but also clarified that they are “fighting for…racial equality,” with the goal of securing freedom for people of color within this new DC Universe:

So, we’ve established he eliminated the Sons of Liberty, but…are they the heroes of this story? It’s unclear! They’re currently targeting DMV employees, and I’m not sure if that justifies their actions. While they could be considered terrorists, their motivation is racial equality-that’s their ultimate goal. They’re fighting for liberation for a specific group of people, which makes them sympathetic in that regard.

As a film enthusiast, I was really intrigued by the Sons of Liberty when they first appeared in Season 2, Episode 3 of Peacemaker. They were initially presented as a terrorist group attempting to destroy a building, but things quickly became more complex. One member explained they were united in fighting [their] oppressors, claiming these oppressors had “ruled all of [them] under their corrupt thumb.” Though Peacemaker and his team dealt with them within that same episode, it’s now been revealed that their ultimate goal wasn’t what we thought – they were actually striving for racial equality, but in a dimension where that concept simply doesn’t exist. It’s a fascinating layer to the story!

What To Expect From Earth-X in Peacemaker Season 2

Following six episodes, viewers now understand that Earth-X is very different from what Peacemaker first believed; this universe is controlled by a Nazi government. Initially thinking the Sons of Liberty were simply criminals who needed to be stopped, statements from Gunn suggest they were actually fighting for what was right, advocating for racial equality before their deaths.

The latest episode concluded with a shocking twist: Keith Smith, played by David Denman, confronted Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) after she found herself as the sole person of color in the area. The situation is even more frightening because the alternate version of Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante is part of the Sons of Liberty, a group determined to maintain the status quo in his reality.

As Peacemaker discovers the truth about his family from another universe and how they live, he faces a huge internal conflict. He’ll need to figure out where he truly belongs. Especially now that his friends are on Earth-X, they must persuade him to join them instead of remaining with his family, who have shown themselves to be terrible in both universes.

As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited because we’ve only got two episodes left to fully explore this amazing alternate world! I’m expecting tons of drama and action as Christopher Smith and the rest of the team really get into the thick of things and go head-to-head with their enemies. It’s going to be intense! I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds – I’m hoping for a thrilling conclusion!

Peacemaker (originally from Earth Prime) intervened, believing he was stopping criminals, and killed the Sons of Liberty before they could detonate their bomb. Though he was seen as a hero for this act, he didn’t realize at the time that the Sons of Liberty were actually rebels fighting against the oppressive, white supremacist government of Earth X. He was mistaken about who he was fighting and why.

The main DC Earth (Prime Earth) has superhero groups like Superman’s Justice League, but this alternate Earth features a different team called the Top Trio – consisting of Peacemaker, Captain Triumph, and Blue Dragon. We don’t yet know what happened to the well-known heroes from the main DC Earth in this darker reality, but the final two episodes of the season will probably explain it.
