2025 has been a fantastic year for horror films, and Him hopes to become a classic. It’s also an unusual mix – a sports horror movie, though any film about my amateur football team would certainly fit the bill! The story centers around Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), a talented American football quarterback. As a child, he witnessed his idol, Isiah White (Marlon Wayans), suffer a career-ending injury. His father always told him ‘No guts, no glory,’ and years later, as a professional player, Cameron is about to discover what that really means.
Following a severe head injury inflicted by an enigmatic demonic being named Cade – an injury requiring an excessive amount of staples – he is chosen by White to undergo training at a remote desert facility. The goal is to determine if Cade can live up to the legacy of being the King of the Quarterbacks. The story is divided into six chapters, each representing a day of his training, with titles like ‘Sacrifice’ foreshadowing the incredibly demanding and rigorous tests he’ll face to prove himself. The training escalates into a series of increasingly dangerous and life-threatening situations, culminating in a dramatic and violent showdown.
Football is deeply ingrained in US culture, often alongside faith and family, and this film leans heavily into Christian symbolism. We see everything from a crucifix pose reminiscent of Cade in multiple scenes to a re-imagining of the Last Supper, but these elements feel disconnected from the actual story. Directed by Justin Tipping, who also co-wrote the script with Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the film unfortunately becomes overly complicated, delivering a confused message that ultimately falls flat. While beautifully filmed, many scenes begin to resemble lavish music videos.
As a film buff, I always thought Oliver Stone really nailed the gritty, almost brutal side of American football in Any Given Sunday – it was compelling viewing, honestly. But this new film, Him, just feels… confused. And at 97 minutes long, it honestly feels like 97 minutes wasted – it really drags on and doesn’t deliver.
Here’s the Him trailer…..
