Sofía Vergara Shares Rare Look Into Co-Parenting With Ex Joe Gonzalez

Sofía Vergara will always cherish her family’s modern dynamic.

The Modern Family actress recently gave fans a glimpse into her positive co-parenting relationship with her ex-husband, Joe Gonzalez-with whom she shares son Manolo Vergara, 34-and explained how they’ve stayed friendly throughout the years.

“He was the love of my life in high school,” Sofía, 53, shared with Us Weekly in an interview that came out on October 1st. “We did get divorced, but we remained close friends. Since he lived in Colombia, it was hard for him to visit Manolo often, but he always tried and they would see each other at least once or twice a year.”

The Griselda actor continued, “He’s always been there, and he has a great relationship with Manolo.”

Actually, Sofía and Joe’s love story began in Colombia. (They got married in 1991, but their marriage ended after two years.) Soon after they separated, she moved to Miami with her son to concentrate on her acting. Even though this move created more distance between them, it didn’t affect Manolo’s relationship with his father. It remained strong. Despite the split, they co-parented effectively.

“We’re on good terms,” he stated during the interview. “We don’t get together as much due to living far apart, but we make an effort to stay connected.”

Regarding how Sofía managed being a single mother while becoming famous, she explained that she focused on balancing her career with being there for her son, Manolo. Although the America’s Got Talent judge ultimately achieved a good work-life balance, she still occasionally felt guilty for not always being able to be fully present.

As someone who’s spent years in the entertainment industry, I can tell you travel is a huge part of it. It’s definitely not your typical nine-to-five! My schedule was constantly changing, month to month, which was exciting, but also challenging. The hardest part? Missing out on important family moments – things like birthdays and school events. It really takes a toll, and you have to work hard to stay connected.

Even though making those tough choices wasn’t easy, Sofía-who people say is seeing businessman Douglas Cabbott-was grateful that Joe generally agreed with how she raised her children.

She said she appreciated not having interference in how she parented. “His father trusted my judgment, which was great – we avoided conflict and didn’t put our son in the middle. At least Manolo didn’t have to experience that,” she added. “It can be really difficult for children when their parents don’t agree on how to raise them.”

No, they will never reconcile. However, with all the birthday celebrations, affectionate hugs, and even playfully enacting a romantic scenario during the virtual reading of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, it feels like this former Hollywood power couple is simply teasing us.

You’ve really made it when you can playfully tease your ex while appearing on his talk show. That’s exactly what happened when Sarah showed up on Jimmy’s stage to discuss her new series, I Love You, America, and jokingly mentioned his wife, Molly Kimmel, describing her as “cute,” “bright,” and “funny.” “It’s not fair!” she quipped. “She got the updated, socially conscious Jimmy. I only had Man Show Jimmy.”

To be honest, we might still be more upset about this relationship ending than the people who were in it. When Anna-who is now married to cinematographer Michael Barrett-found out that Pratt was going to marry Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019, she volunteered to perform the ceremony. She even sent a gift when the couple’s daughter, Lyla, was born in August 2020. A source told TopMob News that Anna was “very supportive” and excited for her son, Jack, to become a big brother.

Their relationship could have easily fallen apart after the breakup. However, over four years later, these HGTV stars are thriving in two key areas: raising their children, Taylor and Brayden, and successfully renovating dilapidated houses into beautiful homes for others.

Describing them as “best friends” in a 2013 conversation with Oprah Winfrey, the parents of actress Zoe Kravitz maintain a close, familial bond. Lenny explained that he and his ex-wife – who later married Jason Momoa before their separation in 2020 – are “one big happy family.” He added, “It’s beautiful, and it just shows you what’s possible when you prioritize connection.”

Since the Dancing With the Stars co-host and retired hockey player ended their relationship in 2020, they’ve consistently shown everyone they remain friendly with each other.

When Brooks announced he was getting engaged to Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir in December 2024, Julianne shared her excitement. She posted on Instagram, “I’m so happy for you both as you begin this wonderful new phase of your lives. I wish you a lifetime filled with love, laughter, and many adventures.”

Several months passed, and the dancer eventually spent a day at the lake with her ex-husband and his now-fiancée, who was pregnant. She shared a photo of the four of them with the caption, “Special day on the lake with these three cuties.”

Following their split in 2015, the parents of Violet, Seraphina and Samuel have successfully navigated co-parenting – a rare feat known as “conscious uncoupling.” They’ve consistently prioritized their children by taking family vacations together, celebrating holidays as a unit, and publicly praising each other. In a 2016 interview with TopMob News, Ben even called his ex-partner “an amazing mother.”

Although Nina and Ian ended their romantic relationship in 2013 after dating for three years, they continued to be good friends. The following year, in 2014, the Vampire Diaries actor began dating Nikki Reed and married her soon after. As a result, Dobrev became friends with the Twilight actress.

The couple ended their relationship in July 2016 after being together for five years. The singer shared on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show the next October that she remains “very close” to Kinney, explaining, “He’s been my lover and a friend for so long.”

“We love each other,” she said. “That’s it.”

The Office‘s on-and-off pairing remained so tantalizingly close after the series wrapped in 2013 that even Mindy gets why people are still shipping them. “If I was on the outside looking at it, I would think the same thing,” she told Good Housekeeping in 2019 of naming him godparent to her kids. “But the truth is that B.J. is so much more like family now than a platonic friend.”

After their divorce was finalized in 2011, the former couple found it easy to work together to raise their son, Bronx. The Fall Out Boy singer has publicly praised his ex-wife, calling her “an awesome mom.”

So, is she past those “7 Things” now? The musician from the JoBro group has stated he’s “really friendly” with his former partner. “We have a good relationship.”

The Dexter actors initially connected on the set of the show in 2006, and their relationship became romantic two years later, in 2008. Even after their divorce in 2011, Jennifer stated that they maintained “nothing but love and respect” for each other a few years afterward.

Often held up as an example of a successful co-parenting relationship, the parents of daughters Rumer, Tallulah and Scout are still very close. So, it wasn’t surprising that they decided to spend the coronavirus stay-at-home period together in Idaho. How about a quarantine dance party?

Around four years after her 2014 split, Lopez continued to praise her ex-husband, the father of her twins Max and Emme. She shared on a 2018 episode of Sunday Today that during their marriage, Marc really boosted her self-esteem and understood her insecurities. He consistently told her, ‘You’re a fantastic singer. Never let anyone question that,’ and she held him in high regard, considering him one of the greatest singers ever.

Honestly, even when things are tough for him – whether it’s just a bad day, a rough week, month, or even year – I know she’ll always be there for her ex-husband and Scream costar. She actually shared on Running Wild With Bear Grylls, about eight years after their 2010 divorce, that “I would say it’s one of the better ones, for sure.” And as they raise their daughter, Coco, she added that “We’re good co-parents together.” It’s so nice to see they’ve managed to stay amicable!

Although their relationship in real life ended around 2007, that didn’t stop them from sharing great chemistry on screen in the 2011 film Bad Teacher.

Although the first few months after their 2013 separation were difficult, the actors are now at the point where they can vacation together as a group. “I genuinely get along with her husband and think he’s a wonderful person,” the Twilight star shared with LaPalme Magazine about a 2017 trip to Cancun. The trip included Garth, Dave Abrams, Peter’s now-fiancée Lily Anne Harrison, and their three daughters, Luca, Lola, and Fiona. Regarding his connection with Jennie, he added, “People enter your life for a reason, and relationships evolve,” he told LaPalme. “Just because you’re no longer living with someone doesn’t mean you can’t still care for them.”

Even though they unexpectedly separated in September 2012, the couple agreed to appear supportive of each other for the sake of their children. “As many of you know, Will and I are extremely close friends,” she shared in a 2014 interview with Howard Stern. “We’re handling things well. I don’t believe ending a ten-year marriage means it was a failure. I think all relationships are challenging.”

The Grammy-winning artist and her former husband-they officially divorced in January 2024-have maintained a friendly relationship while continuing to raise their son Hayes. They even live only five minutes away from each other, making it much easier to share parenting responsibilities.

“Our stops are really easy,” Maren told The Zoe Report in May 2025, “and we’ll have family dinners.”
