Soon after his success launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. also became the lead in another popular series with Sherlock Holmes. The two films directed by Guy Ritchie were well-received by critics and did well in theaters, largely because of the strong connection between Downey and his co-star, Jude Law. For a long time, people have been hoping for Sherlock Holmes 3, but it hasn’t happened yet. Even though it’s been over ten years since Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was released, the third film is still a possibility, and now fans have a better idea of what it might be like if it’s ever made.
In a conversation with Collider, Susan Downey, producer of the Sherlock Holmes films, discussed the progress of the upcoming third movie and shared a potential storyline. She explained, “We’ve been considering a somewhat different approach.” She added, “The idea has always been to set it in America, and whether that’s a good move remains to be seen, but I really like it. I’d love to make it happen. It’s just challenging. It’s been a while, and Robert has really raised the expectations, so I’m not sure if we can meet them.”
Should Sherlock Holmes 3 Be Set in America?
Similar to other stories featuring Sherlock Holmes, Ritchie’s films are set in London. These movies really stand out with their detailed and realistic depiction of Victorian England, fully transporting the audience to that era. While revisiting that setting would be enjoyable, it might be better if Sherlock Holmes 3 tries something new. The series has been on hold for quite a while, so a comeback needs to be impactful. Simply having Holmes and Watson investigate cases in the same old London for a third time could feel repetitive. The aim should be to make Sherlock Holmes 3 feel like a special cinematic experience, encouraging people to go to the movies. A change of scenery is a reliable way to make the film feel new and exciting.
As a fan, I think it would be really cool if Sherlock Holmes 3 took Holmes and Watson to America! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle always kept the original stories in England, and Holmes didn’t visit the US in his adventures until a book of short stories came out in 2019 called Sherlock Holmes in America. So, bringing them to the States feels like fresh territory, especially for a movie – although the TV show Elementary *did* have them solving crimes in modern New York! I think it would be fun to see them as “fish out of water” in a completely new culture, and it would open up amazing possibilities for them to meet famous Americans from history. There’s just so much potential there!
To be honest, Downey isn’t completely convinced about the idea, despite saying she really likes it. It seems the people making the film are still carefully considering the advantages and disadvantages of making such a big change, and that’s a good thing. Simply changing things for the sake of it isn’t a good enough reason. If Holmes and Watson are going to go to America, it has to make sense within the story and fit their characters. The biggest challenge might be figuring out a believable reason for Holmes and Watson to travel so far to solve a new mystery. Maybe they hear about a dangerous criminal causing trouble in America, and Sherlock thinks he’s the only one capable of stopping them. Another possibility is that Sherlock has become bored with solving crimes in England and believes a new environment would give him a fresh challenge.
It’s encouraging that people are still talking about ideas for Sherlock Holmes 3, but it’s unclear when the project will move forward. Robert Downey Jr. is still committed to Marvel for the foreseeable future, as he’s reprising his role in the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. While Avengers: Doomsday appears to have finished filming, Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to begin production next year to meet its 2027 release. It could be several years before Downey is available to film Sherlock Holmes 3, and hopefully the team will use this time to develop a compelling story.
