The soon-to-be-released Resident Evil Requiem on the Switch 2 will be the first traditional, non-cloud version of a main Resident Evil game on a Nintendo console since Resident Evil 6, which was released in 2019. This is exciting news for fans of Capcom’s popular horror series, but a recent issue is dampening some of that enthusiasm – almost like being infected with the T-Virus! Some of the positive feelings are being diminished by the news that this version of the game may not be available as a physical cartridge for the Switch 2.
The debate about whether Requiem will be released on a Game-Key Card for the Switch 2 has become very intense. This happened after someone on Reddit shared what they claimed was the game’s box art, which included a notice about the Game Key-Card. It’s currently unknown if this box art is real, as Capcom hasn’t officially confirmed how Requiem will be released on the Switch 2. Also, most stores haven’t listed this box art on their websites yet. We’ve contacted Capcom’s public relations team for more information and will update this article when we receive an official response, if one is provided.
Resident Evil Requiem Wouldn’t Be the First Capcom Game on a Game-Key Card
Despite the concerns, there’s still a good chance that Requiem could be released on a Game-Key Card. When asked about using Game-Key Cards in a recent interview, Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi explained that this wasn’t a choice made by the development team at [Capcom], but rather a decision made by the sales team. While this isn’t a definite confirmation, it doesn’t offer much hope for players who are hoping to have the entire Requiem game on a single physical Switch 2 card.
Street Fighter 6 and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, both games currently available for the Switch 2, are released using Game-Key Cards. This means that while the original Switch didn’t face much criticism for this practice, both Resident Evil: Triple Pack and Resident Evil Revelations Collection only included one game on the physical cartridge, requiring players to download the rest. It’s currently unknown whether Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village will also be released as Game-Key Cards, as they are both scheduled to launch with Requiem on February 27th, 2026.
While Capcom hasn’t officially confirmed or denied anything about Requiem, some people are already expressing their disappointment. The Reddit discussion featuring the supposed box art is filled with users saying they’ll purchase the game on another system, or jokingly commenting on how unexpected this rumored news is.
Game-Key Cards have been a consistent issue with the Switch 2 since it came out. One of the benefits of buying physical games is that they don’t need an internet connection to play, which also helps keep games available for a long time. However, Game-Key Cards are basically blank cards that still require players to download the game, which reduces some of the advantages of purchasing a physical copy. A report from Nintendo Life found that around 85% of third-party games on the Switch 2 as of August 1st were Game-Key Cards, highlighting just how common this disliked format is.
People have been wondering why Game-Key Cards are so common, particularly with companies selling them. While some believe it’s about saving money, Rob Bantin, a sound designer at Ubisoft, shared on Bluesky that Star Wars Outlaws used a Game-Key Card because the game’s design relied on streaming content, and the cards “didn’t deliver the performance” Ubisoft needed. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, also supported Game-Key Cards, suggesting players should get used to them as they make it possible to bring demanding games to the platform.
