Nina Dobrev Breaks Silence on Zac Efron Dating Rumors

Is Nina Dobrev ready to be all in this together with Zac Efron? 

Not long after news broke that Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev and Shaun White had split after five years of dating, she was spotted on vacation with Zac Efron and a group of friends including Miles Teller, Keleigh Teller, and Chace Crawford.

Although the trip led to speculation about a romantic connection between her and Zac, 37, Nina clarified that it wasn’t the beginning of a relationship. She told TMZ in a video posted on October 1st, shaking her head, “No” when asked if they were dating.

Also, when questioned about whether she and the High School Musical star were simply friends, she stated, “Yes.”

Truly, the 36-year-old is prioritizing her own well-being, sharing with the publication, “I’m looking forward to what’s next and the one certainty in life is that things will change.”

Just before news of Nina and Shaun’s split became official, the actress sparked some curiosity by posting a puzzling TikTok. In the video, she lip-synced to a clip discussing other women attempting to “fix” a man.

In a video from September 5th, Nina responded to a comment about people not liking her by saying, “How do you sleep at night knowing people don’t like you?” She then added, “With no underwear, in case they wanna kiss my ass.”

She went on, “What guidance would you give to women attempting to change their partners? Let me tell you, if he needs ‘fixing,’ he already has a whole team of women trying to do just that-you all look like a real construction crew!”

Just two days after the proposal, Nina went to the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the movie Eternity. She wasn’t wearing the 5-carat diamond engagement ring that Shaun, 39, had given her when he proposed by candlelight.

Although Nina didn’t say whether her mysterious message referred to Shaun, a source shared with People magazine following the announcement of their separation on September 11th that the split was a “mutual decision.” The source also noted that it “wasn’t easy, but it happened with love and a lot of respect between them.”

Regarding their wedding plans, Nina-who got engaged to Shaun in October 2024-had mentioned before that she and Shaun weren’t rushing to get married.

“I really want to enjoy it,” she told TopMob News in March, “and not rush that process.”

Nina shared, “Right now, we’re simply savoring our engagement and this special time in our lives. It feels significant because you spend a large portion of your life as a girlfriend, and then another large portion as a wife, but the period of being engaged is relatively short.”

Plus, as Nina gushed, “It’s so fun to say fiancé.”

Rumors are swirling that Dobrev and White are dating after being seen on a bike ride in Malibu, California. TopMob News reports that the pair started getting closer around New Year’s Eve and their connection “really accelerated” when the coronavirus pandemic began.

“Spending weeks together in quarantine allowed Nina and Shaun to make it known to friends that they are a committed couple,” a source revealed.

Based on their Instagram posts, Nina Dobrev and Shaun White took two trips together to the Zion National Park area of Utah in 2020-one in May and another in December.

Shortly before New Year’s Eve, a source shared with TopMob News that the couple “are genuinely so in love.”

“They openly talk about their future together,” the insider continued. “They’re just super happy, and things are going really well with them.”

Dobrev marked her 32nd birthday as a “do-over” of her 31st, and White honored her with pictures of them both showcasing these styles.

Along with her pal Adam DeVine, the couple dressed up as characters from The Queen’s Gambit for Halloween. White went as the famous Beth Harmon, while Dobrev portrayed U.S. chess champion, Benny Watts.

Dobrev hit the slopes with her pro snowboarder love at Copper Mountain in Colorado.

Following Shaun White’s fourth-place finish in the Men’s Snowboard Halfpipe at the 2022 Olympics and his subsequent retirement from competition, Nina Dobrev shared how incredibly proud she was of him.

In an Instagram post, she wrote, “The close of one chapter signifies the start of a thrilling new one, full of limitless potential.” She continued, “You’ll always be the G.O.A.T. – the Greatest Of All Time – when it comes to snowboarding. And, just for the record, you’re also the G.(B).O.A.T. = Greatest Boyfriend Of All Time!”

The couple finally went red carpet official at the Top Gun: Maverick film premiere in London.

Nina Dobrev turned heads at the 28th annual amfAR Gala, held during the 75th Cannes Film Festival, wearing a stunning red Monot gown. She was accompanied by her boyfriend, who was dressed in a tuxedo. The couple certainly made a statement.

The couple enjoyed watching the qualifying rounds for the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix before the main event. For the event, Dobrev dressed in a stylish, off-white suit from Smythe.

The two turned up the heat while vacationing in the Maldives.

Dobrev shared a playful message on Instagram for Shaun White’s 36th birthday, writing, “I really picked a winner [ and he really picked a booger ].” He continued, “Happy belated Birthday you weirdo. My weirdo. @shaunwhite.”

The duo celebrated the holidays with a family trip to Mexico.

During their trip to Antarctica, White posted on Instagram for Dobrev’s 34th birthday: “What planet are you from and will you take me with you?!” He continued with a sweet message: “Thanks for making life incredible! Happy birthday my love.”

“Being with you is like riding a roller coaster,” the actress shared on Valentine’s Day 2023. “Things can change from intense to playful so quickly… I appreciate you always bringing joy to my life. Happy Valentine’s Day @shaunwhite.”

“Being with you has been the most amazing experience of my life!” White shared on Instagram, celebrating Dobrev’s 35th birthday. “Happy birthday, my love!”

The couple celebrated Independence Day with a group of famous friends, such as Miles Teller, Keleigh Teller, and Usher.

Shaun and Nina shared the news of their engagement on Oct. 30, 2024. Just a week after that, they made their first public appearance as an engaged couple, walking the red carpet at the 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town, South Africa.

On September 11, 2025, it became official that the couple had ended their engagement and split up after being together for five years.
